A world-renowned non-profit research institution dedicated to improving human health through basic biomedical research
关于我们
Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research is a leading, nonprofit research and educational institution that has defined the cutting edge of biomedical science, creating a legacy of research excellence and academic eminence since 1982. Wholly independent in its governance, finances and research programs, Whitehead shares a teaching affiliation with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, offering the intellectual, collegial and scientific benefits of a leading research university. Whitehead provides scientists with the resources and freedom to follow their scientific instincts, form novel collaborations and conduct high-risk research. While probing basic biological processes, 14 faculty Members and 6 Fellows develop innovative technologies and lay the foundation for projects that improve human health. They run pioneering programs in cancer research, immunology, developmental biology, stem cell research, regenerative medicine, genetics and genomics—programs with a record of success.

“For my entire career, I’ve wanted to see what happens in cells when the function of an essential gene is eliminated. Now, we can do that, not just for one gene but for every single gene that matters for a human cell dividing in a dish," Whitehead Institute Member Iain Cheeseman says. https://lnkd.in/eDeAzY5Z

Bats rarely get sick from deadly viruses like Ebola and Nipah despite carrying them. The Jaenisch lab has found that while the SARS-CoV-2 virus can enter bat cells, the innate immune system prevents it from replicating and hijacking the cell's machinery. https://lnkd.in/eqZpuqZq

Whitehead Fellow, Whitehead Institute | Physician, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute | Co-Founder: ALX Oncology, DEM Biopharma, Solu Therapeutics
We are excited to share a study from our lab describing a novel strategy to rapidly produce, test, and validate bispecific antibodies for lymphoma! This work was led by Juliano Ribeiro and Carlota Pagès Geli in collaboration with the lab of Marta Crespo at Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO). Here, we describe a novel strategy to identify new and unappreciated antibody targets on the surface of lymphoma cells. We leveraged this information to rapidly assemble and test 156 bispecific antibodies that target B-cell lymphoma. We identified a multitude of new antibodies that stimulate robust immune-mediated destruction of B-cell lymphoma, including WTa2d1xCD38, a SIRPa decoy crossed with a CD38-targeting domain. These bispecifics could eliminate lymphoma cells in vitro and stimulate anti-tumor responses in mouse models of cancer, including an aggressive model of primary CNS lymphoma. As a next step, we hope to translate these discoveries to the clinic to benefit patients. In the future, we are excited to apply this same approach to other types of cancer to rapidly generate new, transformative therapies for patients. We are thankful to funding sources to support this work, including the Valhalla Foundation and the American Association for Cancer Research.
