Through both first-hand accounts and interviews with leaders across a variety of businesses, authors Mona Sabet, Heather Jerrehian, and Maria Fernandez Guajardo provide insight from people behind successful — and not so successful — companies, the decisions they made, and why they mattered. Sail to Scale identifies 18 common mistakes that leaders make across four pivotal waves of a startup’s journey. Drawing from the authors' collective experience, they dissect each mistake, help leaders recognize the situations that create them, and offer practical advice to steer clear of them so that their businesses can overcome each wave successfully. An invaluable resource for anyone seeking to chart a steady course through stormy seas of entrepreneurship, Sail to Scale is your guide from launch to exit. Sometimes the path ahead isn't always so straightforward. John Riotte kept finding himself in conversation (usually over a cold beer) with people wondering why something wasn't working or why they felt so overwhelmed. He'd explain the planning techniques he'd learned in the military, and eventually enough people suggested that he write a book... so he did. Having a holding statement is important. It makes sense. You have to have them. And also...it's important you move on from a holding statement to steady (consistent) cadence of useful information. A holding statement is a tool, not a strategy. Our friends at Risk Resiliency can help you move things forward.

It's been a long couple of days in the ATL between Hurricane Helene and the massive fire at BioLab in Conyers - which is about 20 miles away but impacted my whole neighborhood this morning. I've tried to be a good neighbor and put on my Your Crisis Manager hat and give some common sense guidance to my friends and neighbors. If there's one thing I have observed between these two events it's this: ?? The general public does not care how pretty your holding statement is. They care about how fast you give them information. In both cases, information came very slowly or not at all. The BioLab fire began early yesterday and resulted in 90,000 people being asked to shelter-in-place and then this morning the majority of people on the east side of metro Atlanta awoke to air that smelled like someone had just shocked a pool next door. It took around three hours for the Mayor of Atlanta to say that they were testing the air in Atlanta. Air Quality per weather underground put us off the charts at 500. ?? Chlorine gas causes respiratory distress, but lack of information and timely guidance about the degree of seriousness and actions to take caused a lot of emotional distress. Not until nearly 2 pm today did GEMA (Georgia Emergency Management) issue any kind of alert and what they did issue was basically "this is a nothingburger." It was all very poorly handled. We should expect way more from our public entities when it comes to messaging in clearly impactful events. I'm happy to share my expertise, but I shouldn't be what's standing between entire neighborhoods and absolute panic at being poisoned by the air.
