The Almond Project is asking the tough questions to build a more sustainable and resilient future for almonds. ?? We began as a small group of stakeholders – from third-generation almond growers (Pacific Ag Management) and processors (Treehouse California Almonds, LLC.) to pioneering food brands (Simple Mills, Daily Harvest, and Cappello's) – and we're growing! Our new project work, supported by recently added partners like Justin's and GOOD TO GO, requires that more food companies, farmers, retailers, transporters, handlers, processors, and manufacturers join The Almond Project. Together, we can move beyond opposition, understand diverse perspectives, and build a brighter future for the Central Valley. Read our latest op-ed to learn about our soil health research and get involved. #TheAlmondProject #RegenerativeFarming #SustainableAgriculture https://lnkd.in/eCPfAht8

The grass on the other side isn't always greener but sometimes it really is! I've had the great pleasure to visit the Jalama Canyon Ranch near Santa Barbara, California and spend a day in the field with the?White Buffalo Land Trust?(WBLT) research team. WBLT is currently restoring over 1000 acres of land using a range of regenerative agriculture techniques that not only introduce biodiversity and healthy soils but also repair the local watershed. Last week, I got to experience the team mapping streams and the local vegetation around them. This research will help to home in on targeted restoration techniques and quantify progress over time.?In addition to all the environmental co-benefits that come from this regenerative approach, a key aspect of WBLT’s work and research is how it increases the nutritional value in food that is produced.?I'm excited to see how this amazing work will influence our thinking regarding the future of our food systems and highlight the importance of biodiversity and regenerative design in creating a sustainable future and thriving planet. Regenerative Agriculture draws inspiration from many lineages, such as permaculture design, indigenous land stewardship principles, and insights from thought leaders like Carol Stanford, among others. Despite its diverse influences, a universally accepted definition of ‘Regenerative Agriculture’ is yet to emerge. ?? This lack of consensus has allowed for both the expansion and exploration of the term, but it has also created space for greenwashing and the dilution of its original meaning. In our recent podcast discussion, Jesse Smith and Page Faye Mitchum dive into the potential opportunities and inherent risks associated with defining the term at this early stage of the industry's development. With the California Legislature and other entities now contemplating an official definition for 'regenerative agriculture,' the future of the term hangs in the balance. We come back to the question, what is of the highest good to the whole of California agriculture, biodiversity, ecosystems, and communities? The FOOD & AGRICULTURE, CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF (CDFA) is currently hosting public listening sessions on this topic. We're pleased to introduce The Elderberry Project, a ground-breaking, farm-to-shelf initiative. Focused on the native Western Blue Elderberry, the project aims to build watershed resilience and support our agricultural community while bringing a climate-appropriate crop to the marketplace. This innovative initiative funded by the USDA Partnerships for Climate Smart Commodities, will establish thousands of plantings across multiple landscapes in our Central Coast region, support farmers and ranchers in the maintenance and harvest of the crop, build out a regional processing facility, develop new brand partnerships and products, and support education and storytelling through a range of platforms over the next five years. We’re honored to collaborate with a diverse group of regional partners on this multi-year initiative to provide a holistic solution supporting ecological regeneration, community resilience, and marketplace diversification. Our partners include; Community Environmental Council (CEC) ?? California Environmental Nonprofit, Chamberlin Ranch, Wild Farm Lands Foundation, Orella Ranch, The?Santa Ynez Chumash Environmental Office, UCANR including UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program, Propagate, Beyond the Farm (a consultancy focused on building marketplace supply of climate smart ingredients), Jungle Beverage Company, JustOne Organics, and Cage Free Productions. Thank you to Santa Barbara Independent for highlighting this regional initiative as a cover story! #regenerativeagriculture #agriculture #nonprofit #climateresilience #climatesmart #climatesmartagriculture https://lnkd.in/eBeq5mpz

Reflecting on the past five years, we want to take a moment to express gratitude for all of you. Your support has been instrumental in building the foundation for resilient food systems that have the power to positively impact the land, our health, and our community as a whole. Our organization’s success lies in creating local solutions, with diverse regional partners, aimed at global impact. This past year we've focused heavily on developing on-the-ground solutions focused on restoring our watersheds, and improving community and ecological health; beginning at our 1,000-acre living laboratory, and expanding well beyond our fenceline. With your support, we’ve: - Influenced 112,244 acres through our trainings and consulting - Engaged 860 community members through our educational events? - Trained 144 farmers and ranchers through our "All-Hands-On" workshops and Savory courses We are actively implementing solutions that reimagine how we raise livestock and grow keystone crops, including grapes, cotton, cattle, and almonds. This work has the potential to impact hundreds of thousands of acres across California and Mediterranean regions worldwide. As we approach 2024, your support is crucial. Our team has built a record of leadership and success since our founding in 2018, and we have the potential to broaden and deepen our impact in the coming year. With your help, we can create a more resilient and bountiful future for ourselves and generations to come. Every gift, big or small, has a tangible impact on the ground. Thank you for considering this crucial work as you make giving decisions this #givingtuesday and throughout the holiday season. Donate today to become a restorative force for people and our planet: https://lnkd.in/gMXKFN4S #givingtuesday2023
