The Fusarium oxysporum fungus devastated Gros Michel banana plantations, and by the 1960s, production could no longer be sustained; the Gros Michel is considered extinct. The Cavendish banana you know and love survived that version of the fungus, but a sibling of Fusarium is now hammering the Cavendish crop, and within a decade, it may suffer the same fate. Elo Life Systems is working to create a Fusarium-resistant Cavendish. The deadline is rapidly approaching, and we're talking only a few years. The race is on...
