Wheeler Kearns is a collective practice of architects. We work with people who seek to enrich their lives in spaces that embody their purpose, energy and vision. When a space we design resonates with your deepest intention, it has a lasting and powerful impact. As we work with you, we devote all our energies to understanding your core purpose, the transformation you seek, your mission. We want to see your challenge through your eyes. Doing this guides us to what we call the “emotional center,” the heart around which your entire project revolves. We return to that central idea as we craft concepts, help you make decisions, and refine our responses to those choices. Everything from the big-picture view to the design of a door handle evolves from that emotional center. The result is a space that responds uniquely to your life, your mission. Our design process requires an uncommon level of attention, curiosity, devotion. Our clients use the word “partner” to describe us as often as “architect.” And we’re proud of that. It reflects our belief that along with a lofty vision, sometimes you also need someone willing to tackle the mundane. One mind focused on solving your problem is good; many are better. We use our unusual structure as a “collective practice of architects” to solicit multiple ideas from a team in the early stages of the design process. It offers you a wider spectrum of possibility. And that can lead to solutions that nobody anticipated, like transforming a shuttered lumberyard into a model, 21st-century school. Or discovering that the 70-foot tower of an abandoned food-manufacturing plant really can be a viable and exciting performance space. Always, we seek to open doors to new ideas about how you can live into your aspiration.

Across the rear yard of the Two Gables Residence, a new pool and pool house are intentionally sited to protect the grove of existing oak trees and to ensure visual separation from the house. The low-slung poolhouse complements the home's breezeway expression, opening with two large folding window walls that blur the distinction between interior and exterior space. An Accoya trellis extends over a dining terrace to provide shade in the hot summer months. ? As we near the end of 2024, with new private residential construction of $918 billion in the U.S. alone, can it really be that the process by which architects and clients find each other remains much as it was in the days before American houses had electric lights? Yes, business by word-of-mouth referral continues to reign in architecture—perhaps not shockingly so for a field that has historically preferred to place the “art” of practice at least a few steps in front of the “business” of it. Still, for the residential client in search of the right architect, a like-minded intellectual and creative partner for what often proves the greatest financial commitment of one’s lifetime, one would think there must be a better way than this. So it was that Forbes’ inaugural America’s Top 200 Residential Architects List was conceived with the aim of facilitating a new platform for clients and architects to connect. Proud to share that the Galien River Retreat project has been honored with a Wood Design & Building Award!? ? Perched on a bluff overlooking a meandering estuary, the retreat features weathered gray Accoya siding and a rhythmic, exposed glulam structure that harmonizes with the surrounding trees, allowing for expansive glazed openings that span from column to column. The glulam beams extend effortlessly from the interior to the exterior, forming a trellis that connects the main house to the garage and a canopy over the pool terrace.? ? At Meadow Lane Retreat, a sand-colored limestone wall wraps around the main house's ground level, extending seamlessly through the home, beneath the feet, and out to a pool terrace. ? ? This limestone, known as Giallo D'Istria Beige, creates a visual and tactile connection with the native dune landscape along Lake Michigan. Known for its durability, character, and versatility, this stone allowed for various thicknesses and sizes, with flamed edge treatments applied where requested.? ? The honed variety with a 60-grit was employed for all vertical walls and surfaces, while a brushed finish was chosen for the interior flooring. Exterior elements received a thermal finish, including dimensional paving, benches, loose steppers, pool walls, and copings. The careful alignment of each layer of limestone was crucial to achieving a cohesive integration. The Art Institute of Chicago Ryan Learning Center (RLC) Renovation involved highly selective, thoughtful demolition and respectful interventions that both honor the existing architecture and support the new program goals of the department to create a social, public, learning space that is welcoming to all.? ? Designed on the structural module of the iconic Modern Wing, new millwork components incorporate subtle curves that soften the open space while indicating different zones within the larger room—shifting from toy storage and nooks for children into a library with books and reference materials for adults. Colorful flooring patterns and furniture define areas for sitting, gathering, and creating. ? ? When the owners discovered that their old horse stable barn slated for transformation into a family bonus space lacked foundations, they embraced a fresh approach to developing their ? acre Michigan Retreat.? ? Positioned at the opposite corner of the existing "L" shaped ranch home, across layers of landscape, an elevated pool, and various outdoor entertaining areas, a new 24' x 24' accessory structure emerges as the linchpin of the property and a testament to the family's values.? ? The single-gable studio purposely blends vernacular forms with contemporary details to seamlessly integrate with the landscape and existing features of the site. Echoing the rhythm and texture of the main house's board-and-batten fa?ade with a shingle roof, the studio presents a modern interpretation, featuring a standing-seam black metal roof and crisp corrugated box rib walls.? ?
