At the 2024 Wheel/Rail Interaction Conference, Brad Kerchof, Senior Track Engineer at Advanced Rail Management Corporation | Global Rail North America and former Director of Research & Tests at Norfolk Southern, presented a deep dive into the June 2019 derailment at the Great Dismal Swamp. The derailment of Norfolk Southern’s Unit Coal Train 820 raised questions about the true cause. While the official investigation pointed to a “broken rail of unknown origin,” Kerchof's analysis suggests a?Vertical Split Head (VSH)?defect in the south rail was likely responsible, overlooked by initial reports. Key takeaways from his analysis: Ultrasonic Testing?revealed signals pointing to a potential internal rail defect, not a surface issue. Wheel Impact?showed marks consistent with a broken rail strike, providing further evidence of rail failure. Track Geometry Data?and other investigative tools hinted at a deeper flaw in the rail. Kerchof’s presentation challenges conventional derailment analysis and highlights how leveraging advanced measurement technologies can lead to more accurate conclusions.
