We see a lot of energy in the AI space. Tool vendors build in first steps of AI technology into their products, but for now they are more on the "little helpers" side. One thing that I don't see a lot is the concept of the Digital Twin of your organization that allows you to not only depict, but also predict and measure the outcomes of your processes and thereby create a self-enforcing feedback loop to excellence ... and, oh, you can use this for complying with regulations too ;-) In our latest episode with Michael Schank we spoke about this and how "process" can be the foundation of these capabilities in your organization! I find it very interesting how few people know about the risk & compliance setup in organizations - you typically have a three-line-setup of independent organizations that are working on this, as our guest Michael Schank explains in the clip below. But why is that? And how can an organization increase the collaboration and effectiveness of risk & compliance management? One way of doing this is the Process Inventory approach that Michael is proposing, but I have seen push back to this in orgs ("too much effort", "who shall maintain this", etc.) ... so, what is the alternative? Sometimes you just want to scream it from the rooftop how important risk and compliance management are (ask your local big bank about this). But why is it that a lof of organizations try to avoid this if they can, and if they do it, they are setting up disconnected programs that don't work with the business architects? That is one of the topics that we are discussing with Michael Schank in the latest episode of the podcast. And he brings the banking and consulting background, while specializing in process inventories - the foundation of every GRC program IMHO. A great mix. I have seen Governance, Risk & Compliance (GRC) projects fail, because they can't create acceptance by the business that they are supposed to server and support. Having worked at a large US bank for more than two years (and, of course, had the regulators having an eye on), and them spending millions of dollars on that program, it was disappointing to see the program fail, because the leaders did not move a bit when they got the feedback from the org units that they don't see themselves in the processes that the GRC folks had defined. This could have easily been avoided (and yours truly got a bloody nose for recommending this in week 1 of the project) if they would simply have asked the people in the org units and worked with them to create a process inventory. Our guest in the latest episode of the podcast, Michael Schank, fully agrees and has made a business out of this by helping clients to stand up their process inventory. But he also spent his whole career in the financial industry with a focus on GRC, so he was the ideal interview partner for this topic. Enterprise risk — something that a lot of people like to avoid talking about. But it is still a big influence on what you are doing in your practices — be it process or IT architecture practiced. Why is that? Is it because auditors are seen as “spoilers” for what you want to do, or is the topic too “dry”? Are you scared of the external validation (or lack thereof)? In our next episode, we are speaking with Michael Schank (again) about this topic and how you can ease these pains by aligning the needs of GRC with what you are doing. No surprise, processes will play a large role in that answer. :-) Episode 79 “GRC From A Process Perspective” will be out wherever you get your podcasts next Monday, November 18. #grc #governanceriskandcompliance #businessprocessmanagement #enterprisearchitecture #processinventory J-M Erlendson Caspar Jans Dr. Russell Gomersall Gemma Hughes Frank Engelbert Marcus Zschuckelt Zbigniew Misiak Mark McGregor Rachel McDonagh Leanne Colligan

Why is it so hard to create the connection between a strategy and the implementation of it? Is it the lack of communication, or is it just too hard to do and there are a million things to be changed? Architecture can help with that. Due to the structured process of describing the different views of the change, you can create the needed line of sight between the intentions and objectives to the different things that need to be implemented or changed in projects. Listen to Episode 78 "EA Use Cases" to learn more about this and the other use cases that we have identified. A bridge to our last episode with Nick Reed and Luca de Risi, who are currently going through this process - as Luca has explicitly stated in the show ?? Mergers & Acquisitions are one of the core EA use cases and brings the EA folks in the spotlight and out of the basement (at least that is where most people assume that they live in). But what happens then? What do these people do the rest of their time? How do they add value? These are topics that we discuss in the latest episode of the podcast, including a quick review of the "sister episode" in which we looked at BPM use cases. So, long story short, go to your podcatcher of choice and have a listen/watch Episode 78 "EA Use Cases" to learn more... #businessprocessmanagement #enterprisearchitecture J-M Erlendson Piotr Królikowski - CGCE? One of the misconceptions of Enterprise Architects is that they are all "just nerds" and they are only interested in technology. While there are some aspects of this (I don't want to deny this notion), there is more that EAs do or should do. For example, someone needs to figure out what that next great improvement idea means for the existing architecture (process, risk, org, app, tech, ...) and how this will be accomplished in programs and projects. But what is the key thing that you need to manage and keep a consistent perspective? It are capabilities and how they determine the decisions on where to spend a limited budget on. Do you agree? Please let us know in the comments. Oh, and while you're at it - Episode 78 "EA Use Cases" (which obviously covers more use cases) is now out wherever you get your podcasts :-) #enterprisearchitecture #businessprocessmanagement J-M Erlendson Michael Schank Michael Idengren Keith Mangold Derek Amah Mike Steyn - Director and Principle Consultant Juuso Rantala Zbigniew Misiak Kalyan Manepally Stephen Kearney

OK, this seems to be a bit redundant because I spoke about this in the announcement for the current episode - which is out now BTW. But this topic is a question that I think about for almost two decades now and haven't found an answer for: *WHY* is it that EA still so immature even after 40+ years? My hunch is that it lies in the positioning - "EA" is for most folks (and definitely for the EA tool vendors) mostly "IT stuff" and the regular business person doesn't care about that. Things just have to work. On top of it -and I am guilty as charged here as well- it is hard to communicate the value if the initial idea doesn't gather interest in the first place. And then you have the fight about who gets credit for what: is Business Architecture a part of EA? Is Process Mining a part of BPM (and therefore also EA)? I am curious what you think - please add your thoughts in the comments. And in the meantime, listen to Episode 78 "EA Use Cases" to get a refresher on our thinking on this topic. I know that this might be a cultural issue, but I don't see a lot of planning when it comes to projects anymore. Everything is "Agile" and I don't see that things are seen through that often. Which is bad, because one of the promises of EA (and BPM) is that someone understands how things are wired up and what to change, so that you accomplish your objective - which should always be business-driven FWIW. From my perspective this is a step back in the maturity of the discipline of Enterprise Architecture. And given the fact that the maturity was never high to start with, this is not a good development. To help a bit in this situation we have a new episode, in which Roland and J-M talk about EA use cases to give you some direction what you can do when you decide that this is a capability that you want to implement in your organization. Episode 78 "EA Use Cases" will be published next Monday, November 4. PS: Yes, this is the bookend to our previous episode about "BPM Use Cases" from a few months ago.
