Today on the podcast, we have the pleasure of speaking with Alex Adams, an Assistant Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology. Alex's research focuses on designing medical devices and health technologies with equity as a guiding principle. His journey to this role is unique; starting as a musician, he transitioned into technology and health after discovering a passion for how electronics could influence sound and, ultimately, health outcomes. At Georgia Tech, he leads a diverse team dedicated to addressing gaps in the healthcare system, particularly for underserved populations. In this conversation, Alex discusses the systemic issues contributing to health disparities, including geographic and socioeconomic factors that limit access to care. He emphasizes the importance of leveraging technology, such as telehealth and continuous monitoring through smartphones, to empower individuals in managing their health. How do we realize a formal climate goal working with informalities? SOUR and Buro Happold’s Urban C:lab team explored a roadmap for Mumbai, which aims for carbon neutrality by 2050. The city faces significant challenges, including a projected population doubling by mid-century, which will strain infrastructure and quality of life. As a coastal city, it is particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels. More than 50% of the city's population lives in informal settlements. Achieving the 2050 goals calls for much deeper collaboration with the communities, local activation, and acceleration in progress. We had the privilege of hearing inspiring talks from keynote speakers about disability representation and visual communication, including Pinar Guvenc from SOUR, Allyce T. and Paul Slack Ciaccia from Disability:IN, and Lindsay Stuart from our own Noun Project team. During the workshop, attendees worked together to concept, sketch, and design new accessibility-focused icons that fill a critical content gap in iconography. A new collection of 20 icons inspired by the event will be vectorized and donated to the public domain through Noun Project, free for everyone to use.
