The Wharton Entrepreneurship Club recently welcomed Jason Chen, a Partner at Contrary, for an “Inside a Unicorn VC Deal†talk - going behind the scenes of how Contrary wrote the first investor check into Zepto, a now $5B Indian online grocery delivery company. I chatted with Jason about how Contrary first met Zepto’s founders Aadit Palicha and Kaivalya V. in 2020, the first impression of the business idea (which was called KiranaKart at the time), and the various criteria that went into their investment decision. ??A few things I’ll remember 1. One of the best traits that exceptional founders have is clarity of thought. You can tell by asking deeper and deeper questions poking at their idea and they’ll have already thought about that angle. 2. The Zepto team made a tough business pivot early-on to focus on hyper-fast local delivery, and they were only able to do so because they were so data-driven and had the metrics to hone in on their customer segment that had the highest NPS. 3. In the pre-seed and seed stage investing game, you’re betting on people. You can be somewhat wrong on market and product, but you have to get the people right. Thank you to the Entrepreneurship Club Startup Week team and Contrary team for helping to organize the event (Ghassan Zughaib, Rachana Lingutla, Brooke Presten, Rose Wang, and many others)! Thank you Jason for keeping it real with the Wharton community! We’re looking forward to having you back.
