A new WHAM-funded study published in?The Journal of Clinical Investigation—led by our partners at?La Jolla Institute for Immunology?(LJI)—proves why analyzing data by sex is a game-changer in medical research. By looking at sex differences in immune responses, LJI scientists uncovered insights that could revolutionize personalized medicine and disease treatment. ???Key Findings: ? Parkinson’s & the Immune System: Scientists found that the protein PINK1 triggers an immune attack in Parkinson’s patients. ? Men vs. Women: This response happens mostly in men, proving sex matters in disease research. ? Better Care Ahead: This discovery could lead to earlier detection and new treatments for Parkinson’s disease. This research is a powerful reminder: when we analyze data by sex, we find life-saving solutions for everyone! WHAM is proud to support LJI in leading the charge for sex-based research—because better data leads to better health outcomes for all. Why is women’s health still an afterthought in research funding? ?? This means missed opportunities for groundbreaking treatments, improved outcomes, and untapped economic growth. At Women's Health Access Matters (WHAM) we’re committed to uncovering and sharing the data needed to unlock this potential. Because when we invest in women’s health, everyone benefits. The Women’s Health @ Top of Mind 2024 report, developed with UPMC Enterprises, Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation, and Lightstone Ventures, underscores the urgent need and untapped benefits of increased investment in women’s health. ? As a keynote speaker at the event preceding this report, I underscored the critical need for collaboration to advance research and enhance healthcare access. Diseases disproportionately affecting women, such as Alzheimer’s and autoimmune disorders, remain severely underfunded—representing untapped investment opportunities with substantial societal and economic returns. ? Doubling investment in Alzheimer’s research for women’s health could add $930M to the economy. Targeted funding and better clinical trial representation will improve both health and economic outcomes. WHAM is dedicated to advocating for these changes. ? Tomorrow is #InternationalWomensDay. As we celebrate, we also have to acknowledge that there are still many areas of gender inequality, including healthcare. The first step in closing the gender health gap is to acknowledge that the issue exists, but unfortunately, there are many barriers to open discussion about women’s health, such as embarrassment and stigma.?? ? So, we're taking the first step and opening up a dialogue. If we can’t talk openly about women’s health, we can’t advance women’s health.? WHAM?uncovers and shares data that sparks lasting change within the healthcare ecosystem.?We know that investing in women’s health drives both medical breakthroughs and significant economic growth. ?? The?Women’s Health @ Top of Mind 2024?report, developed with?UPMC Enterprises, Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation, and Lightstone Ventures, underscores how investment in women’s health can transform healthcare.?I was privileged to join Christina K. Isacson Ph.D., Elizabeth Garner, Jannine Versi, Jessica J. Federer, and Luba Soskin and highlight strategies to reduce investment risks and close critical research gaps. Despite women controlling 85% of household spending, research funding remains insufficient, leaving conditions like cardiovascular disease— the leading cause of death among women—understudied. Systemic change is essential. We need increased investment, better clinical trial representation, and more data. WHAM is fully committed to driving this change.
