?? What does it take to fundraise for groundbreaking healthcare innovation? Oriana Papin-Zoghbi, CEO & Co-Founder of AOA Dx, is on a mission to revolutionize cancer detection. After raising over $22 million for her company’s early detection technology, she’s now setting her sights on an additional $30 million to bring this transformative product to market. Yet, the path ahead is not without its challenges—a reality faced by many founders driving innovation in women's healthcare. Why this matters: ? Early detection saves lives and reduces costs: Identifying cancers earlier improves survival rates, transforms outcomes, and significantly lowers long-term healthcare expenses across the board. ? An untapped market opportunity: Only 2% of healthcare venture funding supports women’s health innovations, despite the immense growth potential and societal benefits in this space.? ? Proof of concept: Companies like AOA Dx demonstrate that innovations often categorized as "women's health" deliver broad healthcare benefits, paving the way for applications across many types of cancers. Oriana’s journey highlights the immense societal and economic potential of investing in early detection and innovation. Yet her story also underscores the pressing need to bridge funding gaps to unlock the full potential of transformative healthcare solutions. ??? Want to hear more? Did you know women exercise less than men, often due to greater caregiving and household demands? This gap is taking a serious toll on their health. Imagine this: Women make up 66% of Alzheimer’s patients and face higher risks for heart disease, yet only a small percentage of venture funding targets women’s health needs. The American Heart Association (AHA) aims to change that with its newly launched $75 million Go Red For Women Fund—an unprecedented investment in women’s cardiovascular and brain health. This fund will back innovations addressing heart disease, stroke, and other critical areas often overlooked in women’s health, including autoimmune disorders and menopause-related cardiovascular issues. At WHAM, we’re thrilled to see the AHA make such a bold commitment to women’s health equity. By investing in solutions tailored to women’s needs, we can bridge the gap in health outcomes and drive transformative change across the healthcare landscape. ??
