Our sister company Golden Section shares some beautiful wisdom on making mistakes. Give this a read and let us know some of the ways you avoid costly #product mistakes.
Building Value by Avoiding Mistakes Mistakes are inevitable, but not all mistakes are necessary. In my latest article, I explore the third pillar of the Balanced Path: Build Value by Avoiding Mistakes. Here’s the core idea: Success in business doesn’t always require bold risks. More often, it requires the quiet discipline of intentional decision-making, humility to learn from others, and tools to avoid preventable errors. In this piece, I share: > Lessons learned from my own leadership journey. > Practical tools like the SaaS Return on Capital Flywheel and the Patience Razor. > The importance of operational simplicity, community, and long-term thinking. Mistakes can be powerful teachers—but the wisest leaders know that avoiding unnecessary ones is the foundation of sustainable growth. Whether you’re a founder, operator, or leader, I’d love to hear your thoughts. How do you avoid mistakes while building value in your business? Let’s discuss below. #Leadership #BalancedPath #Founders #BusinessGrowth

?? ?? Scaling a business requires second and third-order thinking because short-term, narrow decisions often lead to unforeseen complications that hinder long-term growth. Focusing only on immediate needs can result in technical debt, operational inefficiencies, and missed opportunities. By thinking ahead and considering the broader, future impact of today's decisions, you ensure that your systems, processes, and strategies are flexible and scalable. This forward-thinking approach helps avoid costly rework, fosters sustainable growth, and positions the business to thrive as it scales, rather than being held back by shortsighted choices.

Two weeks ago, the Whale Song Product team came together for our Q4 offsite—a time to reflect, strategize, and connect with our parent company Golden Section. Sourcing the in's and out's of your technology and product team has never been easier! #LearnFromOurMistakes Building an in-house team is often impractical at an early stage due to limited resources, time, and expertise, making it challenging to handle all development needs effectively. Engaging with a reliable external partner provides access to specialized skills, scalability, and continuity, particularly during turnover or high-demand periods. This partnership helps mitigate risks, ensures steady progress, and allows the startup to focus on core business activities. By fostering a good relationship with a partner, even as a backup, you gain flexibility and support, which are crucial for navigating the challenges of early-stage growth. #TheBalancedPath Dougal Cameron Kelly Moore Kristen Phillips Tyler Gillespie

We live, we learn, we keep truckin' Mistake 6: Breaking a sprint to fit in additional work, no matter how tempting, undermines the discipline and predictability of the agile process. It disrupts the team's focus, leads to rushed work, and compromises the quality of both the original and the new tasks. This habit can create a culture of constant urgency, diminishing the team's ability to plan effectively and deliver consistent, high-quality outcomes. Over time, it erodes trust in the process, makes deadlines unreliable, and hampers sustainable progress, ultimately hurting the product and the team's efficiency. Staying committed to the sprint ensures stability, focus, and long-term success.

We talk a lot about our "#balanced #path" and what a trophic cascade in the software ecosystem looks like. This is why we post all the mistakes we have seen. ? Mistake 5: Poor documentation exacerbates scalability issues by making it difficult for new team members to onboard, understand the system, or troubleshoot problems. This lack of clarity and cohesion slows down the ability to add new features, integrate with other systems, or onboard more users, making it difficult to scale the product or business effectively. Dougal Cameron does a great job telling the classic #Yellowstone wolf story and what the removal and introduction of a critical player in an ecosystem looks like.
