Here at WHALE Respite Center, we have enjoyed a fall full of fun, creative, and educational activities! Did you know the actual cost of a full day of care with a 1:4 staff to child ratio is approximately $150 per child? Your donations make a difference! WHALE, Inc. of Weld County will provide quality short-term care for children with delays or disabilities, and respite for their families with the overarching goal of enhancing their quality of life, improving wellness, and strengthening the family unit. The physical safety, and emotional well-being, of children and youth is sustained through the preservation of lifelong connections to their families, culture, spirituality, and communities. WHALE, Inc. supports the community’s families and children. Through WHALE’s respite services, the organization will strive to achieve the goal of providing children with delays and disabilities with the opportunity to be in a safe environment with trained staff members who can meet each child’s diverse and individual needs, have social interaction with peers, and participate in sports and/or activities that they may not otherwise be able to due to physical, cognitive, communicative, or behavioral differences. Respite services will also provide school-aged youth a place to participate in social opportunities, tutoring for educational needs, adaptive sports, and activities of all kinds to help young people with delays and disabilities thrive in their environments outside of the school setting.

The Autism Society of Colorado shared a wonderful list of 5 tips for a sensory friendly Thanksgiving and we wanted to share them here as a resource: "1. Plan Ahead: Families & friends should plan ahead and all be aware of the day’s itinerary and accommodations. Pack a “safety net bag” with calming items, address any substitutes, and if needed, discuss an exit strategy. 2. Set Expectations: Routines will be broken around holiday celebrations so it’s important to set expectations through a picture schedule, written timeline, checklist, or conversation. Share details about the day’s process, attendees, sights, sounds and smells that your child will encounter. 3. Create a Safe Space: Plan a safe space in advance, for your child to take sensory breaks when needed; dim the lights, reduce noise and provide other specific comforts to help keep calm. 4. Sensory Awareness: Keep guests and/or hosts aware of sensory needs, so substitutes or accommodations can be made. Incorporate sensory breaks in the safe space, to prevent your child from becoming overwhelmed. 5. Favorite Fall Backs: Make sure there are foods he/she enjoys on the menu; do not try to force new foods or textures, and pack some favorite foods as a backup. Also pack favorite sensory items, toys, books, and clothes to ensure comfort and calmness." We hope everyone has a fun and enjoyable holiday season!

????THE RESULTS ARE IN! ???? On Tuesday, students in our school age classroom learned all about voting and even held their own just-for-fun election! Here are the results: Best Season: Tie between fall and winter Best Dessert: Tie between cake and ice cream Best Superpower: Invisibility President: Spiderman Vice President: Spongebob And we even asked if WHALE should visit the library again and they voted YES! Thank you to the school age teachers for sharing this educational and FUN activity! What a great way for students to learn about voting!
