A world where every whale and dolphin is safe and free.

关于我们

WDC, Whale and Dolphin Conservation (formerly WDCS) is the leading global charity dedicated to the conservation and protection of whales and dolphins. We defend these remarkable creatures against the many threats they face through campaigns, lobbying, advising governments, conservation projects, field research and rescue. Our vision is a world where every whale and dolphin is safe and free. WDC is a passionate, global campaigner for whales and dolphins, speaking with emotion and wonder, but always with authority. We make sure our voice is heard by decision makers. We care about whales and dolphins and we want others to care about them too. WDC’s core belief is that all whales and dolphins have the right to exist as nature intends, not as humans decide. To be able to live free from hunting, captivity, entanglement in fishing gear and nets, and to swim in clean, noise-free waters where boats won't injure them.

Our oceans are under threat from plastic pollution, particularly from abandoned fishing gear. Our recent study of UK harbours shows significant gaps in waste management practices. It's clear: we need coordinated efforts and robust infrastructure to tackle this issue. From free disposal to fisher education and improved recycling, there's much to be done. Let's work together to safeguard our marine ecosystems and promote sustainable fishing. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/e6SswP-d #OceanConservation #MarinePollution #SustainablePractices

As a proud member of the World Federation for Animals (WFA), Whale and Dolphin Conservation is excited to introduce the innovative 'Animals for Climate tool' at COP29 Azerbaijan today.?? Developed with the support of over 75 animal welfare organisations worldwide, this groundbreaking online resource aims to address the critical threats facing #wildlife populations and provide policymakers with the guidance needed to integrate #animalwelfare into #climate and #biodiversity strategies.???? With #COP29 marking the final conference before the February 2025 deadline for countries to update their #climateaction plans (#NDCs), this tool offers actionable solutions for transforming food systems, protecting biodiversity, and enabling #ecosystems to store #carbon more effectively — ultimately helping wild animals thrive. ???????????????????????????? “Whales and other wild animals have long been viewed as the victims of the climate crisis – marooned and doomed on a burning island as the seas rise around them through no fault of their own. Science is telling us though that they play important, outsized and functional roles in ecosystems that keep them resilient to change. They are our essential allies in the greatest challenge we have all collectively faced. We look forward to working with countries to help embed action to protect, conserve and restore animal populations in their climate and biodiversity strategies,” said Ed Goodall, Head of Intergovernmental Engagement, who is currently representing WDC at COP29. What does your role entail?

‘I tell stories to raise awareness
about the awesomeness of whales and dolphins, the threats they face each day and why we need more of them in the ocean to slow climate breakdown.’

Today we're teaming up with @BankofCreativity, @OneMinuteBriefs and their creative community to create an image that celebrates whales as icons of the environmental movement and powerful symbols of our need to restore the ocean. Our planet needs a healthy ocean, and a healthy ocean needs whales. There’s just one rule: they have one minute to create one ad. We cannot wait to see what they come up with! Head over to X to see some amazing creativity??https://x.com/whalesorg / Twitter #SaveTheWhaleSaveTheWorld.

To heal our planet, we must restore nature - we need to re-whale the ocean by allowing it to recover and fill again with life. Whales help the ocean flourish, but to convince governments to take action to restore the ocean, we need evidence of how whales contribute to a healthy and functioning ocean ecosystem. That's why we’ve been supporting researchers at the University of Alaska Southeast to explore the surprising potential of whale poo. Every summer, more than 1,500 humpback whales gather in the waters of Southeast Alaska to feed on fish and krill. Research has already shown that whale poo can be rich in nutrients essential for phytoplankton growth. But we wanted to find out if this is happening in Southeast Alaska. Could these humpbacks be contributing to local carbon cycling through their nutrient-rich poo? Click on the link to find our what we've discovered so far ??https://ow.ly/637q50U54wW

Did you know that once, the ocean flourished? Coral reefs bloomed, fish populations were plentiful, and whales and dolphins were abundant. But industrial whaling, destructive modern fishing methods, pollution, oil and gas exploration and drilling, and shipping 226 million containers across the seas every year have devastated the ocean environment and whale and dolphin populations. To save our planet, we must restore nature. Whales are symbols of our need to restore the ocean. We need to re-whale the ocean by allowing it to recover and fill again with life. #SaveTheWhaleSaveTheWorld

We're all connected by one thing, the ocean. And to save our planet, we must restore the ocean - and whales can help us. We need to re-whale the ocean by allowing their populations to recover to their original numbers. Our Head of Intergovernmental Engagement, Ed Goodall is at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) giving whales and dolphins a voice on a world stage . He'll be meeting with government representatives to discuss our planet’s future, provide real solutions and more importantly, hope. To secure the ocean’s future - and ours - we need to act together. Would you like to know more? Ed, would like to answer your questions, big or small, about the role of whales and the ocean in securing a sustainable future for our planet. Please leave your questions below, and keep an eye out for your invite to our upcoming webinar hosted by Ed, who will answer your questions and provide insights from COP29.
