2025 Workforce Reduction Events: The Catastrophe of Reverse Improvement for the sake of removing complexity.
The Catastrophe of Reverse Improvement: Why Simplifying for the Sake of Removing Complexity Isn’t the Way Forward In an increasingly demanding professional landscape, there’s a rising chorus calling for simpler solutions, consolidating decision-making authority, and delegating it to the bottom of the organization. Yet, according to WGA Consulting’s 2025 COO Annual Trends Survey, a key development on the executive radar is “reverse improvement,” a notion that suggests reverting to earlier processes to counteract complexity. While “back to basics” and streamlining operations can indeed be beneficial, it’s critical to draw a line between truly simplifying and actively dismantling the progress you’ve already achieved. Below, we explore why “reverse improvement” often does more harm than good—and how a balanced approach to simplification keeps us moving forward. 1. Progress Doesn’t Belong in Reverse Improvement is, by definition, forward motion—developing systems, processes, or skills to a higher level. Rolling them back isn’t the same as “going back to basics”; it effectively undoes progress. When done right, refocusing on core principles should reinforce what you’ve built instead of demolishing it. Key Insight: Before reverting to old methods, clarify whether your motivation is genuine simplification or avoidance of the challenges that come with evolution and growth. 2. Build on Lessons Learned, Don’t Erase Them The main allure of “reverse improvement” is the comfort of the familiar. However, tossing aside advancements can eliminate the valuable lessons gained from new tools, data, or processes. “Back to basics” should be a springboard for honing what already exists—not a reason to scrap it entirely. 3. Staying Competitive Demands Evolving, Not Reverting WGA Consulting’s survey underscores the frustration COOs face when rising complexity seems to hinder efficiency. But retreating to outdated methods can hamper agility in meeting new customer demands or emerging tech trends. Real simplification focuses on clarity and adaptability—without sacrificing innovation. 4. Morale Takes a Hit with Reversals Teams often invest substantial energy and creativity to develop improvements. Asking them to undo these advances can be demoralizing and diminish trust in leadership. Conversely, when properly guided, a “back to basics” approach can fuel a sense of purpose by highlighting where simplicity and efficiency truly matter. 5. Sunk Cost vs. Strategic Forward-Thinking We must remain mindful of the sunk cost fallacy—sticking with a flawed strategy only because of previous investments. Still, the solution isn’t always to abandon improvements wholesale. Instead, thoroughly assess which components still support your objectives and which should be reimagined. The catastrophe of “reverse improvement” lies in its focus on eliminating complexity at any cost. #management #layoffs
