The Documentary Film Program is thrilled to team with Get In The Game to host a special event honoring the 30th Anniversary of HOOP DREAMS, a groundbreaking film hailed by Roger Ebert as “the great American documentary” on Wednesday, March 19th at 6:00 p.m. at the Porter Byrum Welcome Center. The film, produced by DFP Creative Director Peter Gilbert?follows the lives of two basketball players from inner-city Chicago, Arthur G Agee Jr?and William Gates, as they navigate the journey from middle school to high school to big time college basketball. Agee, Gates, and Gilbert will join moderator Dave Goren?in a candid, revealing conversation on the making of the film, the issues it tackles, and the resonance it holds 30 years later. The three will share their favorite parts of the film and discuss how the film helped shape and advance the conversation of race and sport in America – a conversation we are still navigating today. A reception will follow the event. Thank you to our event sponsors! The Humanities Institute, Wake the Arts, The Program for Leadership and Character at Wake Forest University,?LAM museum,?and the Communication Department. We look forward to seeing you there!

Congratulations to Allison Rieff (MFA ’23) on being selected for the 2025 PBS Accelerate cohort! Excited to see Allison and her colleagues doing impactful work and bringing their voices and vision to the evolving PBS landscape.
I’m excited to be part of the 2025 PBS Accelerate cohort, a leadership development program for public media professionals. Last week, we kicked things off with an incredible in-person workshop at PBS SoCal , where I had the opportunity to connect with colleagues from public media across the country. It was a fantastic few days of learning, collaboration, and thoughtful discussions about the evolving skills needed in public media. Grateful to PBS and the Accelerate team for putting together such a valuable experience—I’m looking forward to the journey ahead! #PBSAccelerate #PublicMedia #PBS #LeadershipDevelopment

Congratulations to producer Monica Berra (MFA ’16) on the premiere of her film “Paul Anka: His Way” at the?Toronto International Film Festival!
?? VCer and producer Monica Berra is in the Spotlight because her film “Paul Anka: His Way” screens at Toronto International Film Festival this week! The feature-length doc shares the life story of legendary Canadian songwriter,?Paul Anka, who’s spent seven decades (and counting) as one of the most prolific musicians in the world. Part road movie, part living biography, “Paul Anka: His Way” traces the icon’s journey through stardom and constant reinvention. Monica gives us a glimpse into why she loves working on documentaries so much: “What draws me to specializing in historical films is my love of working with archival material. This is when the story comes to life for me — when we secure little nuggets of never-before-seen moments otherwise lost to history that wind up shaping the entire visual and editorial treatment of the film. So when my long-time collaborator, John Maggio, approached me to produce his feature film about an artist whose work spanned seventy years of music history, I knew I was in for a treat. Though I was already excited about this story as an archival-obsessed music lover, it was the intimate, candid access Paul Anka gave us throughout the course of filming that most surprised me — particularly during his 2023 world tour — and enabled us to hop between past and present to tell a larger story about creative pursuit and self-fulfillment.” Watch Paul Anka: His Way on the big screen at TIFF this Tuesday, September 10, with encores on September 11 and September 13! ??? https://lnkd.in/eWkGgMJb Director: John Maggio Cinematographer: Justin Zweifach Editor: Seth Bomse Producer: Monica Berra?#vcmember Production Company:?Arkmedia Production
