Dear Members and Friends of the Westside Urban Forum (WUF), As the newly elected President of WUF, I had envisioned my first communication with you would be at our panel to discuss regional population trends. Instead, I am writing on behalf of our board to extend our deepest sympathies to those who have experienced unimaginable loss this week. We have strong origin in the Westside's beloved neighborhoods, but we connect without borders and our grief extends across Los Angeles. WUF's mission is to foster meaningful dialogue and connection around the land use issues that shape our city.?These fires have been a stark reminder of the challenges we face as stewards of this dynamic, yet vulnerable region, and I look forward to discussing with you how we move forward.?But, we can have these conversations at a later date.?For now, we will be cancelling next week’s panel as our community takes time to grieve and process these fires. The 2024 election cycle revealed a nation where many are turning away from dialogue and debate, instead seeking out like-minded voices—declining to listen to other viewpoints. WUF is a non-partisan organization, and this reflection is not about individual political candidates. The very reason WUF exists is to create a forum—not just for networking, but for exploring ideas that encourage us to understand the issues of the day from diverse perspectives. We bring together people with differing viewpoints to stimulate creative problem-solving and to find compromise solutions that benefit both the public and private sectors. ?? ???????????? ?????????????? ???????? ???????????????????????? ???????? ?????? ?????? ?????????????????? ???? ?????? ???????????? ???? ?????? ??????????????????.?This year, WUF hosted conversations with city, county, and state elected officials, celebrated design excellence, and convened expert discussions on topics ranging from artificial intelligence to the Olympics to racial justice. We took tours, discussed books, and, perhaps most importantly, shared in the company of others who are committed to improving our urban environment. In total, we welcomed over 500 people to WUF panels and events this year. It has been my honor to serve as Board President over the past two years. During this time, we have welcomed ten new board members, hired a new administrator, revamped the Design Awards, overhauled our membership structure, and implemented new financial management practices. We are on sound footing, and it is now time to pass the torch.?Effective January 1, 2025, Jamie Poster Rosenberg, AICP will be taking over the role, and I look forward to supporting her leadership. As an all-volunteer board with a modest budget, WUF is dedicated to providing affordable programs and events at the leading edge of land use dialogue on the Westside. I hope you will consider?joining or renewing a WUF membership?- remember, civic institutions are what will save democracy!
