Westmoreland County Youth Shelter students hosted three US military veterans today – Ashley Marano (US Air Force), Julian Kuszaj (US Navy), and Joe Rice (US Army). The veterans shared their experiences, memorabilia, and what they appreciated most about their service years. Among the activities, the students read poems they had written to honor veterans and gave each of their guests patriotic magnets they had made. The special afternoon, held to thank all veterans who served and sacrificed, was organized by educators, Michelle Stanley-Joyce (US Army) and Diane Huff (Spouse of US Army veteran).
Today’s event culminated in lessons the students have been learning about honesty, courage, commitment, integrity, and service – all virtues of US military service men and women. Also capping this special day was the realization of a goal of $100 the Youth Shelter class raised to support the Wounded Warrior Project. Closing out the afternoon, the students, veterans, and educators joined arms to symbolize their unity and mutual respect.
