Field Friday! ???? Our team in the Rocky Mountain region has been out and about doing some wetland delineations on a potential new project. When starting new wetland restoration projects, it's crucial to have a good understanding of the baseline conditions at a site. Knowing where wetlands are located is an important part of that process to ensure we protect and restore these habitats effectively. The equipment you see might look a bit like a wizard's staff, but these are specialized GPS units that allow us to gather precise data for detailed mapping and analysis. With this information, we can identify wetland boundaries and assess hydrology and vegetation, setting the stage for a successful restoration! #restoration #conservation #wetlanddelineations #wetlandrestoration #inthefield #workingwithwes

We've got dirt moving! ?? Some of the early pictures of the stream restoration activities going on at our Sipsey River project in Alabama. The team is working on restoring and preserving close to 25,000 linear feet of stream throughout the site. To prevent erosion at the site while native plants re-establish, the team has used a combination of seeding, straw mulch, and coir matting. The combination helps ensure bank stability as the stream matures and roots become well developed. #restoration #streamrestoration #streamenhancement #streams #Alabama #habitatrestoration #wetlands #ecosystem #workingwithwes

Zacharias Ranch Mitigation Bank Approved! We are so excited to announce that we have received agency approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Services for our newest riparian and freshwater tidal marsh habitat restoration project – Zacharias Ranch Mitigation Bank. The 580-acre project will build off WES's success with prior restoration projects, such as the Cosumnes Floodplain Mitigation Bank and Bullock Bend Mitigation Bank. Restoration activities focus on re-establishing connectivity between Snodgrass Slough and the historic floodplain. The re-establishment and preservation of Zacharias Ranch will contribute to regional ecological restoration targets while also serving as mitigation for various public and private development projects. We are looking forward to starting construction on the site, which is scheduled to begin in 2025. A big congratulations to all our staff and partners who have worked so hard over the past few years to make this project happen! Building beaver dams to restore habitat in Colorado! The local news crew came out to cover some of the wetland restoration work our team has been doing by rebuilding artificial beaver dams in Colorado's high country. These artificial structures mimic the beneficial impacts of beaver dams, which help improve water quality, increase biodiversity, and support the surrounding ecosystem. By slowing water flow and creating wetland areas, the dams aid in habitat restoration, reduce erosion and enhance water retention in the area. This effort showcases how innovative approaches to conservation can help address environmental challenges. Shout out to our team in Colorado for all of their fantastic work! #conservation #restoration #naturebasedrestoration, Tyler Bell MS, PWS, CWB, Will Duggins, Justin Stelly, PWS, Nicholas Picha, Eveline Vega, @Mike Linfoot https://lnkd.in/gzjT75y7

Employee Spotlight: Shout out to Eric Skinner a fantastic member of our Land Stewardship team who was recently promoted to Senior Land Steward. Congrats Eric we couldn't do it without you! "Currently, I’m involved in site preparation for our new Valley Elderberry longhorn beetle (VELB) projects- Sacramento River VELB Conservation Bank and Harmony Conservation Bank. I’m also assisting with irrigation design and plant layout for both projects. Earlier this year, I participated in the Project Manager in Training (PMIT) program, which has proven highly beneficial to my current role. The program was challenging enough to push me into new aspects of the mitigation process, helping me grow professionally. Over the past five years, I've contributed to many of the western region's projects, and it has been rewarding to see them develop and thrive as planned. There's something truly special about planting a tree and watching it grow to impressive heights." -Eric Skinner, Senior Land Steward #employeespotlight #landstewardship #conservation #restoration #workingwithwes

The WES team had a great time at this year's CA water institute training at Cosumnes River Preserve and Cosumnes Floodplain Mitigation Bank! A big thank you to everyone who made this event possible, our team had a great time sharing and learning a bit of wisdom from everyone there, but most of all thank you to the teachers who made the treck out! Hopefully everyone ended the day feeling confident to share some cool information with their students. At one point Matt Gause our Director of Operations was asked by a teacher what key information should they relay back to their students and he answered with a simple yet impactful answer... "to spend more time in nature". So let's let this be a reminder to all of us to get outside and have some fun this weekend! Happy Friday! #WES #CAWaterInstitute #CosumnesRiverPreserve #EcologicalResources #LandStewardship #NatureEducation #EnvironmentalEducation #OutdoorLearning #TeacherTraining #GetOutside
