The Glencoe County Office Hybrid Mass Timber project in Marina Del Rey, CA - completed last month - consists of three low-rise Buildings totaling 151,000 SF. Western Wood Structures was contracted to provide a turnkey process for The Bradmore Group, which built the first building. WWS was instrumental in working with the steel and concrete subs on tolerance issues, allowing The Bradmore Group to achieve the desired fit and finish. This Hybrid Mass Timber approach reduced the weight of the structure by half (compared to concrete and steel alone), which was important to the building site. Images by Pavel Bendov. This 61’ #glulam stringer bridge with log rails and log approach rails is located on USDA Forest Service property near Ten Sleep, WY. Western Wood Structures fully fabricated and detailed the bridge before treatment. The bridge rests on buried timber cribbing, as pouring concrete wasn’t an option. Thanks to TK3, LLC for taking on installation - supplying and shipping materials to the trailhead was the easier job! #timberbridge

A WWS consultant is currently in Juneau, AK assisting the general contractor in assembling the Brotherhood Trail IMP Bridge. This 135' long Bowstring #TrussBridge supports H10 loading (20,000 lbs) and a 70psf snow load. #BowstringTrusses were popularized in bowling alleys and warehouses in the 1930s and '40s, but they often used segmented lumber to make up the arch. With #glulam beams, a camber is inserted to make a continuous arch with splices provided as needed. The bridge/trusses have approximately 20" of camber at the mid-point. To reduce weight/crane requirements, the WWS team will often install the deck and running planks after the bridge is placed. In case anyone was wondering, summertime in Juneau means rain. This home is under construction in Butte, Montana. The project utilized premium grade #glulam beams, 4x8 Douglas Fir #purlins, and a decorative grade Lock deck. The 4x8 Lock deck is a great alternative to CLT for smaller commercial and residential projects. The Lock deck spans a full 18’, creating a warm open finish from within the structure. Western Wood Structures supplied the heavy timber components, fabricated expansive notches in most of the glulam beams, and delivered on time. Architect Paul W. Powers of Powers Brown Architecture, who designed this project as his personal home, says, “So proud of you guys at Western Wood Structures. Can't thank you enough for being [easy to work with]. Everyone loved your products and asked many curiosity questions.” Anyone out there ready to build a #dreamhome?

Photos of the #MassTimber Redmond Library in Redmond, OR. WWS modeled and supplied the heavy #timberbeam package and coordinated trucking to meet the installer's needs. Librarians will be allowed back into the building to start arranging and working in the new building by the end of September, with a December 2024 official re-opening date.

Work continues on the Micron Technology Campus in Manassas, Virginia with a rapidly approaching completion date. The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company was the GC with Jacobs Engineering as the architect. Countless #glulam columns and beams were utilized in this #MassTimber project, as well as 70+ #CLTpanels. The Honey Run Bridge was opened for vehicular traffic in 1887, connecting the town of Paradise with Chico and the upper Sacramento Valley. Until 1901, it was an open bridge. Due to weather-caused damage to the bridge deck, Butte County decided in 1901 to erect a bridge cover to prevent further damage. In 1965, a runaway truck severely damaged one end of the bridge. In cooperation with the County, Butte Creek Canyon residents repaired the bridge which re-opened in 1972 as a pedestrian-only covered bridge, becoming a favorite site for weddings and other events. The Honey Run Covered Bridge was designated a National Historic Place in 1988. Destroyed in the 2018 Camp Fire, this local and regional icon is being rebuilt with private funding and is expected to be re-opened to the public in early 2025. WWS was tasked with the design and material supply, ensuring the overall look and feel of this iconic covered bridge is duplicated. #HoneyRunCoveredBridge #masstimberconstruction #timberbridge #coveredbridge
