Meanwhile, Former Southern Coach #844 is being prepped for final painting, wrapping up a long-standing project to transform her from the Norfolk Southern Steam Program years into our Western Maryland "Circus" scheme. 2024 has been an amazing year. Our bread and butter comes from the almost 85,000 riders that experienced the Western Maryland Scenic in 2024. Visitors enjoyed refreshed interiors, incredible food, and local music aboard our various trains. The adulation of many rail fans begins with their memories of steam locomotives, once in service, now awaiting a fresh start. Diesel power and passenger car changes are interesting to others. During the next 24 hours of the New Year, WMSR will be sharing with our passengers and fans alike what it takes to keep heritage railroading moving forward in 2025. Some updates will be very obvious, some won’t (we can’t wait to see who plays the guessing game). Thanks to the tireless efforts of NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND WISCONSIN RAILWAY CORP, WMSR has become the proud custodian of former Norfolk Southern B32-8 locomotive number 539, which is operational and joins its counterparts 558 and 561. WMSR plans to immediately initiate the painting and maintenance process for 539 in preparation for the busy fall foliage season. WMSR extends its sincere gratitude to the following entities for their vital role in facilitating the swift acquisition of 539: McHugh Locomotive, Horizon Rail and the kind folks at CSX & Norfolk Southern!
