March is National #ColorectalCancerAwarenessMonth! We wanted to take this opportunity to highlight the WNC Colorectal Screening Initiative (WNC CRCSI), a program that provides vital colorectal cancer screening to average risk, uninsured, low-income patients between the ages of 45 and 75 in Buncombe, Henderson, Madison, Mitchell, Yancey, Transylvania, Rutherford, Macon, Jackson, Swain, Haywood, McDowell, and Polk Counties. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in North Carolina but is highly treatable when detected early. Services provided through programs like WNC CRCSI can have a significant impact in decreasing health disparities in the uninsured. Interested in learning more about this remarkable program? • Western Carolina Medical Society (WCMS) is thrilled to share our 2024 accomplishments. We made great strides advocating for healthy communities, expanding healthcare access, addressing health inequities, and promoting wellness, even as our region faced the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. None of these achievements would be possible without the unwavering support of our volunteer providers, partners, members, and donors. Thank you for standing with us for a healthier and resilient western North Carolina. To further support our mission, please click to donate today. ?? https://shorturl.at/kgcCp

  • One of the best parts of my job is meeting so many people who do the right thing for others. Today was no exception. Thank you, Dr. Bunio, and everyone at Cherokee Indian Hospital for a great visit.

The Western Carolina Medical Society (WCMS) Executive Director, Karen Wallace-Meigs, has been thrilled to be out visiting partners and collaborators across the region. Last week, she toured HCA Mission and today she toured the Cherokee Indian Hospital, declaring it the "most beautiful, thoughtfully designed hospital I have ever seen." Many thanks to WCMS Board member and CIH Director of Clinical Services, Dr. Richard "Rick" Bunio, for giving Karen a tour and sitting with her to chat. We are especially grateful to Dr. Bunio as he has served WCMS for more than eight years as a dedicated board member! Notice the beautiful Cherokee language on the signage. Karen assures us that there are powerful, traditional designs and artwork throughout the hospital with the entrance designed to be reminiscent of a Cherokee basket.
