When designing a plant, it is important to include emergency systems in the design, considering factors like location, layout, and power. Backup generators for power and offline monitoring systems are crucial to help prevent potential disasters. Did you know? In California, due to regulations, some facilities can only run their backup generators for 20 hours a year (for testing and maintenance purposes) to make sure they will work during an emergency event.? Many backup generators run on diesel. Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is a regulated contaminant, meaning there are strict regulations on acceptable emission limits. In California, these regulations are meant to reduce the DPM to levels below 0.01 g/bhp-hr (grams per brake-horsepower -hour). What are ways you prepare for emergency events in your area? Did you hear Andrew Ohrt, PE, CISSP is the American Water Works Association (AWWA) Water Champion for October? In celebration of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we are thrilled to share that AWWA chose to spotlight West Yost’s very own Resilience Practice Area Lead, Andrew Ohrt. He specializes in providing our client with state-of-the-art cybersecurity measures having worked closely with Idaho National Laboratory to develop industry best practices. When asked how do you see cybersecurity within the water sector? Andrew replied “I think there are going to be two main advancements. First, regulations will be put in place that require minimum cybersecurity practices for most U.S. water and wastewater utilities. Second, designing water and wastewater systems with cyber risk explicitly considered will become part of the standard of care to which all licensed engineers are held.
