Adults with disabilities are nearly twice as likely to misuse prescription drugs. Jeanette Garcia, associate professor at the?WVU College of Applied Human Sciences, said the findings point to the urgency of curbing prescription misuse among adults with disabilities. “Almost 10% of the individuals with disabilities in our sample reported misusing prescription drugs within the past year, compared to 4.4% of individuals without disabilities,” Garcia said. Three?West Virginia University?nursing faculty know firsthand the difficulties faced by family caregivers and their chronically ill loved ones. With a $2.7 million award from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Nursing Research that is one of the largest ever for the?WVU School of Nursing, the faculty researchers aim to support these families while increasing access to care in the rural reaches of the Mountain State by testing an integrated, nurse-led intervention for family home care management of end-stage heart failure and palliative care. A multidisciplinary research team led by?West Virginia University?is working to develop data-driven insights to help policymakers ensure economic resilience amid energy changes with a $100,000 grant from the Resilient Energy Economies initiative, a partnership between the Bezos Earth Fund, which provided funding for the research, Resources for the Future, Columbia University, Montana State University-Bozeman and the University of Notre Dame. The University’s?Regional Research Institute?and?Institute for Policy Research and Public Affairs?are partnering with the nonprofit Center on Rural Innovation for the study, which will examine the varying impacts of changes in the energy mix on local public finance, revenues and spending, and economic outcomes. Amy Hessl, a professor of geography at West Virginia University, is working towards predicting climate histories and trends through tree ring growth patterns to fight against future disasters. So when wildfires engulfed the Los Angeles, California area in January 2025, she said, ongoing warm air temperatures and variable precipitation will lead to even more extreme fires in the future.
