In September, I was lucky enough to explore the picturesque and extremely historical town of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia (and even luckier to get to write about it for Thrillist!). It's exactly halfway down the Appalachian Trail in the Eastern Panhandle Region and just a bit over an hour's drive from Washington DC and Baltimore -- making it a perfect day trip or weekend getaway for those who seek some quick solace from "big city life" while exploring the outdoors and learning about American history in an immersive location. Whether you're a hiker (the AT!), a biker (the 185-mile?Chesapeake and Ohio Canal), or a history buff (the?Harpers Ferry National Historical Park with John Brown's Fort!) you're bound to be a great experience exploring town. Just returned from the Leave No Trace Global Summit in Colorado, where I had the opportunity to present alongside Stella Hehnly and Ennis Barbery Smith on the collaborative efforts between Visit Mountaineer Country CVB and the West Virginia Department of Tourism to educate 5th graders across the region and state. We also explored ways for others to implement similar initiatives in their own states. It was amazing to learn about other programs and brainstorm ways for expansion and improvement.
