The Michigan Center for Employee Ownership (MICEO) is a nonprofit that seeks to grow employee ownership in the Great Lakes State. The “Siver Tsunami” is the term given to the wave of aging baby boomers business owners are retiring at an alarming rate. Over fifty percent of closely held businesses will experience ownership during the next five to ten years. Unfortunately, many of these businesses and the owners haven’t properly prepared to successfully transition these businesses to the next owners(s). We seek to help these owners initiate “exit planning” and explore selling the business to their employees. Employee ownership is a proven way to retain businesses, jobs, and economic impact on the local community. How can MICEO support local businesses: 1. Help inform business owners and their advisors of all the ownership exit options (providing expertise on transitioning to an employee-ownership structure). 2. Helping business owners understand the various employee ownership structures and determining which ones may be appropriate given their circumstances. 3. Accessing informative webinars, videos, and articles that help owners better understand employee ownership. 4. Connect business owners with owners who sold their companies to the employees to gain insight into such transitions. 5. Refer qualified professionals to complete the requirements necessary to transition to employee ownership. 6.
