As someone who has personally experienced divorce (both as a child and as a husband), I can both sympathize and empathize with my clients who are going through the divorce process. I share two pieces of advice with my clients that I tried to heed through my own divorce: always take the high road (whenever possible) and put the children first (if there are children). When going through a divorce, it’s very common to crave as much stability as possible. This is why, in many cases, one (or both) of the spouses wants to keep the family home. While this makes sense emotionally, often it is impractical to do so. Buying out a spouse means refinancing an existing mortgage (usually a higher interest rate), and maintaining the home can be a big stretch if not outright impossible. Also, if you have a sizeable gain in value from when you bought your home, you may face a capital gains tax situation. Married couples can take a $500,000 exemption, reducing the amount of gain that is taxable, but a single person can only take a $250,000 exemption. By selling before your divorce is final, you and your spouse can potentially save a lot of tax dollars. ?????????? ???? ?????????????????????? ???????? ?????????? ?????? ???? ???????? ???????????????? I'm so grateful that I had the opportunity to moderate a panel with Kristyn Carmichael, Esq, CDFA, Tanya Aure, JD, CDFA?, CCFC and Thao Truong, CFP?, CDFA? on financials issues during divorce for the Academy of Professional Family Mediators 2025 Online Conference. These women did an amazing job and shared such great insights on how to think about and deal with financial issues in mediation. They made my job as the moderate easy with everything they shared and I know the attendees walked away with a plethora of great information.
