Shaw House is a beautiful, Grade I listed Elizabethan mansion in Newbury and is managed by us here at West Berkshire Council. We're exploring options to enhance Shaw House's commercial potential whilst safeguarding its heritage. To do this, we're holding a market engagement event at Shaw House on Wednesday 12 March, 10am - 3pm. Feedback from the event will be used to inform internal discussions around commercialisation options for the house. To register your interest in the event, and to receive an information pack, please email:?[email protected] You will then be given an allocated timeslot for a guided tour, followed by a presentation and facilitated breakout groups. Helping to make West Berkshire a great place to live, work and learn.
关于我们
West Berkshire Council provides important local services for around 155,000 people across the district. We provide education, housing and social services; we're responsible for roads in the area and we provide rubbish, recycling and other waste services. As well as these critical services we also make sure there are other local amenities and attractions such as Libraries, leisure centres, a museum and our Grade II listed Shaw House. We employ around 1,500 staff, not including those based in schools, and currently have three main offices in Newbury as well as smaller satellite offices across the district. Our vision is to make West Berkshire an even greater place to live, work and learn. West Berkshire welcomes business, enterprise and industry into a productive, growing and dynamic local economy. We are dedicated to supporting new and existing businesses as well as businesses looking to relocate to West Berkshire. For more information visit https://businesswestberks.co.uk/ West Berkshire is an area which offers beautiful countryside, thriving market towns and good transport links to London and southern England. Covering 272 square miles, around 60% of our area is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and our countryside is as varied as it is plentiful. Around 40% of residents live in rural areas although there are plenty of opportunities for urban living as well. Newbury is the largest town in West Berkshire, although Hungerford, Pangbourne, Thatcham, Theale and Tilehurst are also significant communities along with suburbs bordering Reading in the east. The district is widely recognised as an area with a high concentration of high-tech firms and is home to companies such as Norsk Data, Quantel, Vodafone and the Atomic Weapons Establishment. West Berkshire has a thriving economy with one of the lowest unemployment rates in Europe, and is at the hub of what is often called 'Silicon Valley'.

?? Our Newbury hub recently hosted an open day, bringing together local partners and community leaders to celebrate the vital drug and alcohol support available in West Berkshire. The event featured powerful speeches from public health partners from West Berkshire Council and our teams, highlighting the impact of accessible, high-quality recovery services. A standout moment was Andreas Kavalierou's introduction of the GLOVES programme, a unique boxing-inspired initiative that fosters resilience and determination in recovery. The day concluded with networking and a shared commitment to collaboration. On #TLevelThursday, we are celebrating the incredible support of our dedicated managers at West Berkshire Council, who are passionate about developing future talent by championing T-Level placements. Sharon Pearce, Central Family Hub Manager, is a strong advocate for work experience at the Family Hub, helping to highlight the fantastic work her teams do to support the local community while also providing valuable opportunities for students. Here’s what Sharon had to say about her experience as a manager: "When I was contacted about hosting a student, though keen, I was a little anxious. The hubs provide such a varied and at times intense service, could we offer all that the student wanted? I needn’t have worried; Millie has been brilliant. She wants to be a Social Worker and so we have offered every available opportunity to experience as we could, whilst maintaining confidentiality and safeguarding protocols. "She has become an asset to our team, supporting staff in groups, planning for sessions, sharing her ideas and creativity. She has built relationships with families, attended home visits, training sessions, and undertaking some administrative work. "Having Millie here has given the team an opportunity to coach and mentor a young person, building their own continuous professional development.?For me as a manager, it has allowed me to see my staff shine and share their passion and knowledge for their roles." #NAW2025 #NationalApprenticeshipWeek #WorkforWestBerkshire

On #ApprenticeWednesday, you can hear from our apprentices about their experiences at West Berkshire Council! April joined West Berkshire as an apprentice straight after completing her A Levels in 2023 as she saw the benefits of earning whilst she was undertaking a qualification. The support she received all the way through the interview process and since starting in her role helped her to develop her skills and confidence as she came into the workplace for the first time. Hear from April here: https://lnkd.in/ehGnxQMY James has been with West Berkshire Council for 18 months, having started out as an apprentice in our Digital Team. He found that the flexibility he had to balance his workload with his studies helped him to achieve his Business Analyst qualification and to successfully apply for a permanent role which makes the most of his new skills.
