This super fascinating piece by Carolyn Witte for her newsletter, The XX Factor, looks at how more and more companies are expanding their focus on women’s health and highlights a growing group of companies driving innovation in this space. We love seeing how employers are increasingly recognizing the importance of caregiving, reproductive health, and broader well-being for women in the workforce. Women make the majority of healthcare decisions, control 80% of U.S. healthcare dollars, and spend significantly more on care—especially in peak reproductive years. The demand for better solutions is massive, and companies that recognize this aren’t just filling a gap; they’re tapping into one of the biggest growth opportunities in healthcare. The caregiver penalty doesn’t just affect women in the short term. It has lasting financial and career consequences. Women are more likely than men to scale back their hours or leave the workforce due to caregiving. The "sandwich generation"—those juggling both child and elder care—spend an average of 22 hours on eldercare and 28 on childcare per week, leading to career interruptions and financial strain. The impact extends into retirement, with studies showing that time out of the workforce for caregiving can reduce savings and delay retirement by up to 21 years. Check out these organizations working to reverse the trend, and tag others in the comments. Across industries, caregiving is one of the biggest forces shaping the future of work — and it’s often women employees who feel the impact most. Women are nearly 2.5x more likely to absorb caregiving responsibilities, juggling careers while caring for children, aging parents, and loved ones. This invisible labor shapes their career paths, financial security, and well-being — and yet, it’s rarely part of mainstream conversations about workplace equity and economic opportunity. That’s why today’s International Women’s Day event in Minneapolis hosted by Ready. Set. Pivot. (RSP) put care front and center. Wellthy CEO and co-founder Lindsay Jurist-Rosner joined Melanie Moriarty, Sr. Director HR Rewards at Best Buy, and Wendy S. Wiesman from RSP for a powerful conversation about how caregiving responsibilities ripple across women’s careers — and what employers are doing to break new ground to better support family caregivers. As we head into International Women’s Day this weekend, it’s a perfect moment to reflect on the essential role women play in the care economy — and the policies, benefits, and cultural shifts needed to create a more equitable future. The urgency of today’s care crisis — and the staggering scale of the care economy — is impossible to ignore. Families are navigating the rising demands of childcare, eldercare, and complex care, all while employers, advocates, and care innovators work to build solutions that actually meet those needs. That’s why we’re excited for the launch of The Holding Co.'s "2025 Trends in the Care Economy" — a powerful new resource highlighting the emerging trends, innovations, and urgent shifts shaping the care economy — and what it will take to build a more supportive future for families. This report brings together insights from founders, investors, public health experts, insurers, corporate leaders, and more to capture a pulse on what’s happening in care today — and where we need to go next. It’s especially exciting to see commentary from leaders with Hilton, Harvard Business School, Pivotal Ventures, Springbank, and so many more friends and partners of Wellthy who are breaking new ground and shaping a new vision — not only for the future of the care economy, but for what meaningful support for families looks like today, tomorrow, and for generations to come. As we prepare to celebrate Women's History Month and International Women's Day in the coming weeks, a critical issue remains at the forefront for us at Wellthy: caregiving responsibilities continue to have a disproportionate impact on women in the workforce. This powerful piece by Michelle Travis for Forbes highlights the dual challenges women face. The negative career consequences for women caring for aging parents are particularly severe for the "sandwich generation" – the 7.8 million eldercare providers who simultaneously care for at least one child under 18 living at home. "Women face a double whammy," explains Liz O'Donnell, founder of Working Daughter. "From a family perspective, a societal perspective, and a media perspective, there's an expectation for women to be extraordinary mothers and also to be extraordinary daughters." These expectations disproportionately affect women's health, financial security, and overall workplace equity. Addressing this systemic issue requires thoughtful workplace policy changes. Organizations that implement flexible work arrangements, comprehensive caregiving support, childcare support, and resources for emotional wellbeing can help mitigate these challenges. These approaches not only benefit individual caregivers but also contribute to creating more equitable environments and help businesses retain talent and reduce turnover. A powerful new series from WCBS | CBS New York, "The Cost of Caregiving,"?captures an important reality that many caregivers know all too well: "People become caregivers and don't even realize it. You think, 'Oh, I'm just going to help Mom with this and help Dad with that,' but slowly you're taking on all of these responsibilities in addition to your own responsibilities at work and at home. And suddenly, you are now taking care of them, and there is no manual for it," says reporter Jennifer Bisram. "We often hear caregivers talk about feeling depressed, lonely, and isolated and that is something we have to talk more about. There are so many resources out there–you just have to find them. You do not have to be alone." It's so important to see these critical conversations get deeper and meaningful coverage — highlighting both the challenges caregivers face, as well as the importance of finding proper support for families navigating caregiving. This kind of visibility helps de-stigmatize the struggles many caregivers experience, and encourages so many more to seek the resources they need both at home and in the workplace.
