    “I’m demanding. You’re gonna work a lot. You’re also gonna have to be in the office. Are you okay with that?” This is the blueprint for startup hiring in an employer’s market.     “We make sure each hire checks two boxes: will they push us to become better, and will they attract even more exceptional talent to Runway?" Siqi Chen embodies this philosophy as CEO of Runway, the financial planning platform he founded after laying himself off as SandboxVR's CEO during the pandemic. When modeling his company's financial runway (ironically), he asked his CFO if spreadsheets were the only option. The answer was "Either that or ugly enterprise software." This question sparked Siqi's mission to create financial tools that don't require a finance degree to understand, with Naval Ravikant even helping name the company. But what's truly impressive is how Siqi built his team. He thinks the standard advice “A-players hire A-players, B-players hire C-players” is overrated. Because even with advantages like strong investors and personal recognition, he acknowledges a reality many other founders face early on: consistently landing the absolute best isn't always possible. Instead, Runway uses bar raiser questions to make sure every successive hire elevates the team, and attracts even better talent. It's the same philosophy that drove him to challenge legacy systems in financial planning - never settling, always raising standards, whether for products or people.
