?? Exciting News! ?? (for me at least!! ????) I'm thrilled to be leading a pre-conference workshop at the 2025 Annual Conference of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine! ?????? ?? Date: Sunday, November 16, 2025 | 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM US CT ?? Where: Gaylord Texan Resort and Conference Center ???? ?? Managing hopelessness and helplessness in clinical practice is one of the most challenging aspects of care. These emotional states can stall progress ??, undermine treatment plans ??, and leave patients—and clinicians—feeling stuck ??. When patients express a sense of hopelessness or resignation ??, it can be hard to respond effectively without minimizing their experience. Clinicians may feel pressure to “fix” things fast ?????, but these moments call for patience, presence, and skillful engagement ??♀??????. ? This workshop will introduce my innovative "TeMPPo" framework, offering tools to help patients reconnect with meaning, agency, and possibility ???????. It’s a chance to go deeper, get practical ????, and sharpen your skills before the main event kicks off! ???? If you're attending #LM2025, I’d love to see you there! ???? I'm also in brilliant company in the pre-conference workshop line-up with several esteemed colleagues including Jeff Young, Andrew Mock, Gia Merlo, Melissa Sundermann, Cliff Morris Amy Comander, Z. Altug, Tyler Hemmingson and the incomparable Rak ("rock") Jotwani, MD, DipABLM.?????? ?? May we all be like my Ace to somebody, everyday, with all we have to give. For six faithful years, he sat under my chair while I worked. Many, many days began at 3 or 4 a.m. to guarantee at least 6 hours a day on this final educational journey. Last week, I successfully defended my dissertation, it was approved and uploaded to Proquest. It was titled, “First Generation Low-Income College Students: Improving Financial Acumen via Psychological Well-Being”. It contains a resource for post secondary institutions to improve graduation rates for FGLI students, with a final page count of just over 300. I received a congratulatory email from the department chair at Regent University, Dr. Jessica Guilfoyle, and the chair of my dissertation committee, Dr. LaRonda S., addressing me as Dr. Hoshall-Hakimian. I’m turning 59 next month. My goal was before I was 60. This morning, someone asked me, what was the single most unexpected win from this journey. Without a moment's hesitation, it has been the new relationships forged. My master's journey at Harvard Extension School was one of the richest experiences of my professional life. I remain on the teaching team there in the I/O Psych space because I cannot imagine not staying connected to this incredible pool of innovative leaders. There have been so many relationships that I will treasure for the remainder of whatever runway I have left on this earth, but two standout: Bobbi Wegner, Psy.D. and Charlotte Bingaman MArch EdM. If you are fortunate enough to have humans like this in your circle, you have won the lottery in life. "Wealth is all the things money can't buy"-health, purpose, life-long learning and strong social connections. Outside the scope of my research, the biggest take-away from this six year personal experiment in humility, is that we are all doing life for the first time. Everyone was a beginner at some point. Finish self-doubt sentences with “yet”. “I don’t know what the heck I’m doing - yet.” Identify the noise that may be keeping you from your optimal human experience; find a way to replace the noise with thoughts and behaviors that are in alignment with your values. Each of us is a miraculous original. What lights me up may be totally different for the person next to me and that’s super cool. I never want to be in an echo chamber. Sense of belonging isn’t about being the same. It’s about cues for safety being present in the relationship or in the group. When we feel safe, we are brave, curious, innovative, take risks and perform better. So, going back to before life took over, what was that thing that lit you up? That thing that made you uniquely you? How much energy do you spend doing it now? What might be the noise keeping you from that thing? Maybe run a little experiment …. Keep me posted.

?? Firstly, thank you to my colleague, Rudi Schmidt, whose recent post on #innovationfailure planted a seed that’s been growing in my mind ???? In particular, it got me thinking about how we treat learning when we’re working toward goals. ?? In many professional (and even personal) settings, learning is treated as epiphenomenal: something secondary, a bonus that happens on the way to the “real” outcome. But what if learning is not the byproduct… but the phenomenon to be examined? The main event? The point of the whole exercise? ? Because when you think about it, the behaviors we perform in pursuit of an outcome are fleeting—they’re the result of our current best guess, not the lasting transformation. ?? Learning—and especially how we apply that learning—is what drives sustained growth. It’s portable. It reshapes our internal models. It’s what allows us to adapt, evolve, and respond to future complexity with greater capability. ?? The research supports this shift: A learning goal orientation—as opposed to a performance or outcome focus—has been linked to: ? Deeper engagement with tasks ? Greater persistence in the face of failure ? More ethical decision-making ? More innovative and adaptive behaviors ?? For instance, Van Yperen et al (2004) demonstrated that mastery orientation (mediated by learning) trumps performance orientation in job performance. ?? And foundational studies like those by Ames & Archer (1988) have shown that learning-focused individuals are more likely to develop mastery, rather than just chase performance metrics. ?? So how do we shift from treating learning as epiphenomenal to putting it at the center? Here are a few ideas: ?? Set learning goals, not just outcome goals. Ask: What would I like to understand more as a result of this? ?? Make time for reflection. What did I learn? How can I apply it in other areas of my life? ?? Experiment. Treat the goal as a ?container? for learning, not as a pass/fail (or even rated) outcome. ?? Talk about learning. With your team, your peers, your clients—normalize the idea that progress = insight + iteration. ? What’s something you’ve learned recently—maybe even through a failure—that shifted how you think or work???♀? Let’s not treat learning as the “by-product” and start making it the thing we actually aim for. ?? Drop your reflections or examples in the comments—I’d love to learn from you, too. #LearningMindset #LeadershipDevelopment #Innovation #Reflection #LearningInAction #LearningOrientation Further reading: Ames, C., & Archer, J.
