Been curious about Modern Monetary Theory? The breakout session with Morgan Edwards at the Economy for Public Good conference is an opportunity to learn! ? Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) upends conventional understandings of government financing through taxes, challenging the ways that budgets are allocated. This masterclass will explore new possibilities for how we might finance the economy for the common good. ? Morgan is a PhD candidate at the University of Otago, where he is researching Modern Monetary Theory (MMT). His work is concerned with understanding the mechanics of government finance in New Zealand and the MMT contention that the state is self-financing, in that it is not principally funded through tax or bond revenue, and therefore need not ‘run out of money’ to fulfil its objectives. We are looking forward to having both Bernard Hickey and Ganesh Ahirao at the Economy for Public Good conference next week - watch their conversation on the open letter that was published this morning. Today Ganesh was one of 15 independent, union, and university economists who have sent an open letter to Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Finance Minister Nicola Willis, saying the Government’s approach to managing public finances is short-term and short-sighted. It’s good to see public debate around New Zealand's economic strategy and direction. They are right to point out that measuring the economy's health is more than just the Government's books and that cutting investment in areas like infrastructure, science and training today can be harmful tomorrow. We should be investing more in the wellbeing of current and future generations - making sure people have enough healthy food to eat, warm dry houses to live in and opportunities to learn and work. WEALL’s vision is a world where economies prioritise the wellbeing of all people and the planet. A world where prosperity is measured not by GDP but by the health of our communities, the sustainability of our environment, and the inclusiveness of our societies. Gareth Hughes and Sally Hett were at Parliament this morning for UNICEF Aotearoa's World Children's Day forum and Gareth shared some reflections and two practical steps we could take to build a better world for young people to grow up in.

WEAll Aotearoa has some exciting news! ?? ?? We are proud to announce that Sophie Handford is joining the team as our Future Generations Lead. Sophie, is a 23-year-old Councillor and founder of School Strike 4 Climate Aotearoa, who mobilised 170,000 people for climate action in 2019. At 18, she was elected to Kāpiti Coast District Council, where she now chairs the Strategy, Operations and Finance Committee. We are excited to have Sophie join Gareth Hughes and Sally Hett part time on this important mahi. Our Wellbeing of Future Generations Act for Aotearoa campaign, to encourage greater long-term and intergenerational thinking, is a priority for us and it's going to be great to have Sophie's leadership on this.
