In April 2020, a group of internationally recognized data scientists developed WellAI, a COVID-19 research tool. Powered by a new self-learning AI engine, it reads and interprets medical studies with high accuracy, covering 69,000 health conditions. The WellAI team, breaking traditional AI boundaries, expanded their baseline tool with four additional neural networks. This expansion enabled the assimilation of over 30 million peer-reviewed medical articles, journals, case studies, and it continues to assimilate new publications as they emerge. The result is a multidisciplinary diagnostic solution that addresses practically every known health condition, from the common cold to rare diseases. The tool allows physicians and patients to simply speak their condition in a Siri-like fashion. WellAI ‘listens’ and cuts through the white noise of emotion and non-essential context to derive and translate medical symptoms into a diagnosis. Based on an initial set of symptoms, it asks logically derived questions to medically clarify how the patient is feeling, much like a medical practitioner during patient intake. It arrives rapidly at an initial diagnosis, usually in less than 2 minutes, limiting the diagnostic outcome to one or two most probable health outcomes. WellAI provides a logical and scientifically validated starting point, or a scientific second opinion, for a physician or medical practitioner to begin the process of diagnostic validation and to create a prescriptive treatment plan. The WellAI solution is presented in two forms: a Digital Health Assistant, represented as an “app” that can be downloaded onto a smartphone, computer, or iPad, which a physician, patient, or caregiver can use anywhere, anytime; and as an AI engine. The AI engine is the neural net/AI technology, which can be repurposed or used on the backend to power or enhance other solutions, like a front office workflow screening or EHR enhancement. https://WellAI.health

This sobering yet enlightening story is the culmination of 5 years of meticulous research on 23andMe, which began as a competitive landscape analysis in digital health for my then-new startup, WellAI. There are structural problems that allowed the 23andMe mess to happen. If we don't address them, we'll be watching this movie again (as if we aren't already). CEO Anne Wojcicki knew there was no monetization in prevention or diagnosis—she said so herself in a Bloomberg interview. Yet she kept lying to investors and customers. An honest founder cuts costs early, returning money to investors rather than riding the gravy train until $2.4B evaporates!

These 70 PowerPoint slides—two years of my relentless research—will blow your mind. I explain exactly how VC bros and healthcare incumbents manufactured today's digital health crisis, where mediocrity trumps innovation. I'll also share bold, actionable solutions to fix this mess. As promised, I shared these slides with all 120 event attendees of the last week's Health2Tech. Today, I'm making them available exclusively to my paid Substack subscribers. I'm placing the slides behind a paywall, hoping to keep them out of reach from LLMs and search engines, given how AI companies have shamelessly been stealing copyrighted material.

It was an honor to speak at Health2Tech yesterday. Thanks for the invite, Alex Koshykov. I’m encouraged and inspired by the interest my research sparked. It shows me that people genuinely want effective ways to solve the digital health crisis in America—ways that truly benefit core stakeholders: patients, nurses, and doctors. As promised, the slides are available to all 120 event attendees and will be available soon to my paid Substack subscribers through a post I’ll share in the next couple of days. Nice panoramic photo, Alex Koshykov! ??
The digital health community in New York continues to set new benchmarks! Yesterday, nearly 120 innovative healthcare leaders and entrepreneurs gathered for our event, making it a truly remarkable experience. Many attended specifically to hear Sergei’s presentation, and he delivered a wealth of insights and analytics—so much so that attendees are still requesting his slides today. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making the event so special. Happy to collaborate with Startup Grind New York & Joshua Ness. Stay tuned for more exciting events, and look forward to seeing you in Philly and DC soon.

I'm excited to be co-hosting a very cool event with my friend Alex Koshykov at Health2Tech along with Startup Grind New York on March 19th. Sergei Polevikov, ABD, MBA, MS, MA ????????, is coming in hot with a brutally honest look at “The Mass Extinction of Digital Health Startups.” He'll draw on his extensive research — including his recent analysis of 132 publicly traded digital health companies — to provide a sobering assessment of the current landscape and offer insights for building sustainable and successful ventures. I expect he won’t sugarcoat the state of the industry — attendees can expect some controversy, but also loads of valuable insights. Register here: https://lu.ma/d7pysz3i
