We LOVE sharing our Plug-A-Versary stories!
The Well Done Foundation loves sharing our Orphan Well "Plug-A-Versary" stories! This week, we are celebrating the plugging of the Russell M. Clark Estate 11 in Bradford, PA that was completed October 3, 2021! Drilled in the 1880's, this was our oldest well plugged to date. Infact, the well was so old that the Russell M. Clark Estate 11 was last operated by a "Jerk-Line", or central power system, typical of leases from that early era. Also cool was the wooden rods that were recovered from the well as the team from Dallas-Morris Drilling, Inc. were preparing the well for cementing. The Well Done Foundation was honored to be supported in this project by Seneca Resources Company, LLC, a leader in Corporate Social Responsibility in the Region and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. After more than 140 years, this orphan well was finally plugged and the surface areas restored, allowing the landowners to be able to enjoy their property without the threat of a potential release, or worse. Making a difference #onewellatatime is what gets the Well Done Foundation out of bed in the morning and keeps us going through the long days. There is NO Silver Bullet, NO Easy Button, NO Magic Wand when it comes to making an impact for the environment our communities. It takes grit, hard work and a clear mission to be able to leave things better than we found them. Methane may be odorless, but orphan wells often leak more than just that. ?? Toxic gases like hydrogen sulfide (H2S) - known for its rotten egg smell - benzene, hexane and others are often released too - posing risks to humans, wildlife and air quality. ?? While these smells help us locate these wells, they also remind us that plugging them is an urgent job that needs to be done to protect our planet and communities ?? Kicking off this week with the Well Done Foundation and another Plug-A-Versary. On this day four years ago 9/30/2020, the Anderson 007 was plugged and the team from VICE News was there on the ground to cover it all, along with Brian Riebe and Zac Cataldo with the Now You Know YouTube Channel. For the Well Done Foundation, this was a huge milestone during our first year of operations and in the throes of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Being able plug three orphan wells was an amazing feat and the Anderson 007 was our second donor-funded project. The Well Done Foundation is on location with the University of Montana’s Field Methods Class in Montana’s legacy Kevin Sunburst Oil Field performing critical methane quantification and detection with Ventbuster Instruments, ABB and Sensors, Inc. This project is supporting the University of Montana’s Sustainability Department commitment to offsetting the University’s carbon footprint with some homegrown projects, like plugging orphan wells with the Well Done Foundation.
