Working on an HMI replacement for a customer project. We are replacing the old Panelview 1250 with a Weintek USA, Inc. cMT HMI. We are also building a new main control panel for this equipment, upgrading from the Micrologix 1100 to a CompactLogix L306ER.

Technical "debt" can sneak up on you and flexibility is key when combating it. Our original simple level monitoring panel was written in a simple cost-effective PLC with fixed memory programming. This was fine for minimal features and only four sensors. When it needed to be expanded to accommodate more sensors and features, dev time and potential errors shot up exponentially and compromises would have to be made. We use Codesys almost exclusively for our bigger projects and initially I felt it was overkill for this. Fortunately, we had already upgraded to using a Weintek HMI and that opened the door for easy Codesys integration. The cost-effective PLC was converted to remote IO, Codesys license added to the HMI and the program was rewritten in 1/10th of the time with no compromises made.
