Here's our advice to sustainability professionals who have been laid off. 1. There are a lot of jobs out there.?We have lived through recruitment?cycles including?the Great Financial Crisis —?and we came back from what felt like very hard times. 2. This is hard work.?Take some time to process and prepare. 3. Seek guidance. Recommended sustainability minded coaches are Erin Ewart, Trish Kenlon, and Shannon Houde, MBA, PCC.?Outplacement?firms such as LHH are also very good, but they lack sustainability expertise. Also try peer to peer coaching! 4. Use your resources. Sustainability topics like climate change and diversity, equity, and inclusion face heightened political opposition due to anti-ESG legislation, social media campaigns, and investor activism. Our 2025 Chief Sustainability Officer Report highlights a major shift in sustainability roles. ——?Most surveyed CSOs say they are spending more time on regulation and compliance, and 60% of CSOs said regulatory is their biggest challenge. ——?Now 90% of CSOs report spending more time on compliance than two years ago, and 75% of CSOs say regulatory requirements are the biggest factor influencing their sustainability strategies. ——?Partnering with Legal and Finance has increased.
