We are honored to stand with the Palm Springs Section 14 Survivors Advisory Group in celebrating a historic victory that brings overdue justice to the families and descendants of the Section 14 community. In the early 1960’s Section 14 was a predominantly Black and Latino working-class neighborhood near downtown Palm Springs. Its homes were destroyed and burned during a brutal urban renewal project in the 1950s and 1960s. Last week’s $5.9-million settlement with the City of Palm Springs provides long-overdue recognition and repair, affirming the resilience of survivors and the power of collective advocacy and organizing. The council also approved $20 million for housing initiatives and $1 million for local business programs to address long-standing economic disparities in the city’s marginalized communities, along with a day of remembrance to honor the contributions of Section 14 residents to the city.
