At Weigel’s, we believe a job can be more than a paycheck—it can be a path. A path to discovering new talents, gaining confidence, and building a future you may not have seen coming. Joe’s story is a powerful reminder of why we invest in people first. What started as a food service role during a difficult time became a stepping stone to a fulfilling career in IT. Today, Joseph is our IT Retail Systems Manager, and we couldn’t be prouder of how far he’s come. His journey is one of resilience, growth, and the kind of potential we strive to uncover every day. Below is Joe’s story—in his own words.
'Do I qualify? Can I really do this?', a story that began not with aspiration, but with brutal truth and unemployment. Eight months of searching and emailing into the void of online applications leaves you hoping for any type of response. In October of 2022, I wasn't looking to build a career, I was looking for a lifeline. When my lifeline finally appeared, it was a cook's apron at Weigels Inc. I had applied, not driven by a culinary aspiration, but out of sheer, desperate need for work. Any work. But life, it seems, has an algorithm of its own. And as always, it throws curve balls. Weigel's HR saw something other than the cooks' apron for my future, they saw a potential I had long since given up on after those hopeless eight months. They saw me in IT, something I had not even considered. From the quiet darkness of unemployment, I was thrown into the complexities of IT. The seed of Self-doubt that had grown inside me was an unwelcome, constant presence. 'Me, in IT?' The phrase whispered repeatedly in the lead up to my new chapter. But I had a chance. I learned, I adapted, I grew. I had to. That initial step, which I had made of desperation, proved to be the first move in a game that I could barely have planned for. I quickly moved up from IT Tech to IT Project Coordinator, and then, incredibly, to IT Retail Systems Manager. In hindsight, it's simple to look back and see the path, to connect the dots. But at the time, every advancement was a fight against my own voice of inadequacy. 'Do I qualify? Can I really do this?' What I've learned in these two and a half years is that potential can thrive in the most barren of environments. That opportunity can arise from the most desperate of circumstances. And that sometimes, the most unlikely roads lead to the most profound growth. My path from a desperate application in food service to Retail IT, is a typical story of the power of the human spirit. It's a reminder that even in our darkest hours, there is the potential for change and for a future that we never imagined. For that, I am eternally thankful to Weigel's for seeing my potential and giving me an opportunity to prove to them and myself, that I CAN do this.
