Pass-through projects, where a land trust acquires land with the intention of another entity being the permanent owner, are a productive method of conserving land. Land trusts have “flipped” hundreds of thousands of acres of land for conservation purposes to local governments and state agencies in Pennsylvania. What does it take to successfully accomplish these projects? Laura Bower and Kyle Shenk of The Conservation Fund will set the stage with an introduction, leading into group discussion. Congratulations to our friends at Armstrong Trails who recently celebrated the opening of the Brady Tunnel, a significant milestone in the region’s recreational history.?This project showcases years of dedicated work to restore this historical landmark and close one of Pennsylvania’s?#TopTenTrailGaps. Since the creating its gap list in 2009, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has celebrated the closure of 60 trail gaps across the state. "Perseverance and the power of partnership are the keys to successful trail development. As we’ve built Armstrong Trails mile by mile and sometimes foot by foot, we’ve also united in our mission to connect people to places—and to each other—through the shared experience of recreation and nature." Last week, we had the pleasure of partnering with The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC) to plant a variety of beautiful trees throughout Pittsburgh! Thanks to IRA funding, this project brought together our Crew members and WPC staff for a rewarding day of planting and greening Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods. We added species like Crabapple, Flowering Lilac, Sweetgum, American Lilac, Japanese Tree Lilac, and Osage-Orange, just to name a few! A big thank you to WPC for making this experience possible. It’s always a joy to work together, to build a greener, more vibrant Pittsburgh! #Pittsburgh #WesternPennsylvania #CommunityProject #ConservationEfforts #GreeningInitiative #EnvironmentalStewardship

Natural (or green) burial is not a new concept.?As many know, it involves the burial of an unembalmed body, directly into the soil without a concrete vault, and in an entirely biodegradable casket or shroud. What is new with this concept is that many of these “green cemeteries” are essentially nature preserves – nature preserves that just so happen to allow for these limited impact burials on the land. Join this session - led by Carin Bonifacino of the Pennsylvania Friends of Green Burial - to learn how natural burial can facilitate and complement the many goals of land preservation: ?https://lnkd.in/dTQptUVQ

A look back at the 2024 #RiveroftheYear, the Allegheny River. Nominate your favorite waterway for 2025 ROTY by November 11th! The historic Allegheny River starts as a stream in Potter County, meandering through a field of wildflowers before crossing briefly through New York and then through six counties in Western Pennsylvania. The 325-mile river ends in Pittsburgh where it meets the Monongahela River and flows into the Ohio River, providing drinking water to more than one million people and acting as an ecologically and economically precious water trail. The fertile valleys and abundant biodiversity have led many communities to call this place home, including the O-non-dowa-gah (Seneca Nation) who call the Allegheny Ohi:yo’ (beautiful river), the Lenni Lenape (Delaware Nation) who named it welhik-heny (most beautiful stream), and French settlers who referred to it as La Belle Riviere. ??
