It was a true honor to participate in the panel on ‘The World of AI and Augmented Reality: Can Bhutan Benefit?’ alongside visionary thinkers such as Sonam Pelden, Audrey Low, Richard Rothenberg and our insightful moderator, Pema Wangchug MSc. ??
During our discussion, we explored how AI and AR can uniquely contribute to Bhutan’s development across diverse sectors such as cultural preservation, education, and agriculture. For instance, AR could revolutionize the tourism industry by bringing historical sites to life through immersive experiences. Imagine tourists at the iconic Paro Taktsang monastery, not only viewing the breathtaking architecture but also interacting with virtual narratives of its history through their devices.
In agriculture, AI could support Bhutanese farmers by implementing precision farming methods—using machine learning to analyze soil conditions, optimize irrigation, and predict yields—aligning with Bhutan’s goals of sustainable and organic farming. AI can also assist in language preservation, documenting and protecting Bhutan’s linguistic heritage by digitizing endangered dialects. These efforts will ensure younger generations maintain a strong connection to their cultural identity. ????
One of the most critical aspects of our conversation was the importance of data privacy and regulations. As Bhutan integrates these technologies, establishing strong AI governance frameworks will be essential to ensure data transparency, security, and ethical AI use. Drawing inspiration from global examples such as Estonia’s digital identity frameworks and Singapore’s blockchain-based data transparency models, Bhutan can create a robust infrastructure that protects cultural and personal data while fostering innovation. ??????
An unforgettable highlight of my time in Bhutan was meeting His Majesty, the King of Bhutan. His deep commitment to his people’s well-being and his visionary approach to Bhutan’s future are incredibly inspiring. Our conversation reinforced how essential it is to align these technologies with Bhutan’s core values, such as Gross National Happiness (GNH)—ensuring that technological advancements enhance the well-being of the people, safeguard environmental sustainability, and promote community cohesion rather than detract from these vital values. ??????
I am grateful to have contributed to this important dialogue and excited to see how AI and AR will shape Bhutan’s future—from promoting sustainable development to enhancing cultural preservation. A heartfelt thanks to the Bhutan Innovation Forum and my fellow panelists for such an inspiring exchange of ideas! ????
