WECAN is seeking a part-time Event Production Coordinator in a contracted position to develop and execute WECAN’s upcoming Global Women’s Assembly for Climate Justice, a public forum to take place virtually in June 2025. With the guidance of the WECAN Executive Director and Program Associate, the Coordinator will lead panel mapping and Zoom production. This role requires a flexible, creative, and strategic thinker who can manage multiple tasks, envision ideas, conduct thorough research across a broad range of topics focusing on cross-sectional climate justice themes, present findings, and has virtual production experience and Zoom expertise. Additional responsibilities include supporting and conducting speaker outreach, writing, and other administrative duties.

Today we launched the newest Escazú Agreement toolkit for Brazil, which provides women land defenders resources to navigate their country's laws to achieve the protections of the Escazú Agreement. However, the journey to accessing these rights can be fraught with legal complexities and barriers, particularly for women who are at the forefront of defending their land and communities. These toolkits aim to support the transformative potential of this historic Agreement to build a thriving and equitable future for all, including those courageous individuals defending land and ecosystems. This coming week, the Women's Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) will participate in the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The upcoming biodiversity negotiations of COP16 will take place in Cali, Colombia from October 21 to November 1. Unlike the UN Climate Change Conferences, these meetings occur biennially, making this a crucial opportunity to address the global biodiversity crisis. WECAN is honored to be advocating with a distinguished delegation of frontline and Indigenous women demanding world governments to take significant and transformative action for biodiversity protection, which also is essential for addressing the worsening climate crisis. As part of our advocacy, WECAN will present policy interventions, on-the-ground biodiversity protection and climate justice projects, and system change frameworks. We will emphasize the root causes of interconnected crises and advocate for just solutions that foster a healthy and equitable world. WECAN will be advocating at the UN CBD COP16 for: ?? As countries prepare their next Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) due early next year, WECAN is releasing a set of climate justice recommendations and guidance for governments during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The recommendations urge governments to catalyze women’s leadership, uphold Indigenous rights, protect biodiversity, phase out fossil fuels, and advance a #JustTransition. ?? Financial institutions must invest in a Just Transition, halt fossil fuel expansion financing, and protect people and planet! Today WECAN is releasing the fourth edition of the report, “The Gendered and Racial Impacts of the Fossil Fuel Industry in North America and Complicit Financial Institutions,” which underscores the intersections of gender, race, fossil fuels, and complicit financial institutions—calling for divestment from fossil fuels and extraction for the health, safety, and protection of our communities and Mother Earth. The report explicitly exposes the role that financial institutions play in preserving and perpetuating negative gender and racial impacts through focusing on 9 regional case studies, from the buildout of LNG terminals in the Gulf South to the Willow Project in the Western Arctic. The report spotlights Vanguard, BlackRock, Capital Group, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Royal Bank of Canada, Bank of America, and Liberty Mutual as primary financiers of harmful fossil fuel projects within the regional case studies. The report delivers recommendations and a call to action for financial institutions to immediately divest for the health of our communities and the protection of Nature and our climate. Women are rising up to stop fossil fuel extraction and harm in their communities. They are guardians of ancestral knowledge and advocates for a more healthy and just future for all generations. We are very honored to work and be in collaboration with amazing Indigenous leaders from around the world who are protecting forests, growing food sovereignty, stopping pipelines, protecting their territories, and so much more.
