Fueling pathbreaking social science research that delves deep to examine complex global issues / at Harvard since 1958
关于我们
The Weatherhead Center for International Affairs is the heart of social science research at Harvard University, dedicated to addressing pressing global challenges. As a research accelerator, we assemble a multigenerational and multidisciplinary group of scholars, students, and practitioners to bring their unique perspectives to a wide range of complex topics—including religious conflict, climate change, immigration, and populism. We share our insights via our publications Epicenter and Centerpiece, and at seminars, conferences, and lectureships. The Center also recognizes that rigorous analysis requires long-term investment and is committed to preparing students to become the next generation of scholars who will tackle critical, far-reaching issues impacting our world. More specifically, we fulfill our mission to fuel pathbreaking research in several ways: * We support programs and projects that provide a framework for collaboration on focused research projects * We sponsor conferences, workshops, and seminars where scholars exchange ideas and learn from each other * We host public lectureships and other events on vital issues facing the world today * We award competitive grants and fellowships to global scholars and practitioners * We offer research funding to Harvard faculty and students, including our successful Weatherhead Research Clusters—which represent core faculty interests and push the frontier of knowledge in their respective fields As a dynamic research institution, we foster deep-rooted research, a wide perspective, and long-range vision. Our ultimate goal is a world better understood. What started as a trip to a museum in Tianjin in 2016 is now: “Rescuing Heritage from Humiliation: The Navalist Reinterpretation of the Sino-French and Sino-Japanese Wars,” by Tommy Jamison,?The Journal of Military History?88:4 (October 2024): 923–48. In the late-nineteenth century, U.S. “navalist” historians reinterpreted defeat in the War of 1812 as an argument for an ocean-going battlefleet. Something similar is underway in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as historians and propogandists reimagine the Qing Dynasty’s defeats in the Sino-French (1883–1885) and Sino-Japanese Wars (1894–1895) as sources of naval heritage. Discarding Mao-era orthodoxies, the navalist reinterpretation rescues an origin story for Chinese sea power from the “century of national humiliation.” As in the nineteenth-century United States, historical example and myth stress China’s identity as a maritime state and contextualize the ongoing modernization of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). By highlighting these parallel revisionist efforts, this article draws attention to the instrumentalization of historical memory in the service of navalism as well as the comparative history of the United States and China: two continental empires that justified battlefleet navies. This took a(n embarrassingly long) while so lots of folks helped. Grateful to Clements Center for National Security, Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University, and the Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs Fellowship for support. Japan's National Institute for Defence Studies for time and office space. And to NORTH AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR OCEANIC HISTORY, McMullen Naval History Symposium, my seminar students at Naval Postgraduate School and the always excellent JMH reviewers for feedback. https://lnkd.in/gYdtcvcc

Nice article in the Crimson about yesterday's Program on US-Japan Relations seminar. Daniel J. Kritenbrink, the Biden administration’s Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, both expressed concern over cooperation between Russia and two countries—North Korea and China—and emphasized the importance of the US working with our allies in Asia. https://loom.ly/8TK5hUQ

In the days before the recent U.S. election, Beyond Conflict's Timothy Phillips was joined by Monica McWilliams, Founder of the Northern Ireland Women's Coalition and key negotiator in the Northern Ireland peace process, along with Donna Hicks, Associate at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University, for a timely discussion about the importance of building coalitions and respecting democratic principles in times of great turmoil. As Americans move beyond a divisive election season, history tells us that it will take creative leadership and empathy across difference to chart a new path forward. The insights from this conversation remain relevant as we look ahead and work towards better functioning and more inclusive governance. Listen to "We Can Get Through This: Navigating a Divided Country in Times of Great Uncertainty," hosted by the Ford Hall Forum, now: https://lnkd.in/eAfX5kjs
