?? Today in History: The Equal Rights Amendment Passes Congress ?? On March 22, 1972, history was made when Congress passed the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)—a monumental step toward gender equality in the U.S. The ERA was designed to guarantee equal legal rights for all Americans, regardless of sex, ensuring fairness in employment, property rights, and beyond. Before 1972, women couldn’t open a bank account, get a credit card, secure a loan, or rent housing if they were single. They could legally be denied a job simply for being a woman or for being pregnant. The ERA was meant to change that—yet, over 50 years later, we are still fighting for full ratification and legal recognition. Today, as women’s rights face new threats across the country, the ERA serves as a reminder that progress is never guaranteed—it must be defended and advanced. ????
