The U.S. has a mature infrastructure in place for the #responsiblerecycling of #automobiles, with more than 14 million tons of #steel, 11 billion pounds of #aluminum and significant quantities of #copper, #plastics and other materials recovered and processed each year for manufacture into new #manufactured products, including new automobiles. The future of #Autorecycling does pose a number of challenges - as well as opportunities - for the infrastructure globally - and that was the subject of a presentation last week by Kristen Hildreth, Recycled Materials Association (ReMA)'s VP of GR and Public Policy at the International Automotive Recycling Congress held in Antwerp (#IARC2025). While #electricvehicle (#EV) adoption is slower than originally projected within the US, it is coming and will result in changes to the processes and technologies needed to address changes in material composition, the presence of #lithiumion #batteries - and potentially other battery compositions that pose safety concerns and require special handling, and the increased interest of the #auto industry in the #recycledmaterials industry. And a priority of mine is learning from what is happening in other parts of the world so that we can be prepared here in the US to provide guidance and support to #ReMA members - including the nearly 300 automotive #shredders around the country - as to how to navigate the coming changes.
