This summer, NYC Smoke-Free partnered with youth through the Futures and Options program to tackle tobacco control. Youth participated in workshops exploring the retail landscape, the dangers of menthol tobacco and e-cigarettes, and the influence of smoking in media and online. These sessions not only educated participants on the harmful impacts of tobacco, but also equipped them with powerful advocacy tools, including how to engage local media and write compelling op-eds. It is with deep sadness that Public Health Solutions (PHS) announces the passing of Dr. Raymond Fink, distinguished health research administrator and longtime and devoted member of our Board from 1973 to 2016 and its Chairman for many years. His impact on our organization and on the communities we serve will be long felt. Ray headed our Institutional Review Board (IRB) for many years, ensuring that each study within the community was carried out with the utmost integrity, relevance and respect. His visionary leadership led to PHS’s bold decision to take responsibility for receiving and subcontracting State and federal funds for HIV AIDS to community organizations, an endeavor that initially faced skepticism and faced scrutiny from both government and the community groups. Despite the challenges, thanks to Ray’s commitment, this initiative became one of PHS’ largest service ventures and became the foundation for the organization’s extensive work in community health today. Ray’s passion for community health and for community based research was evident in all he did, inspiring countless colleagues and mentees. His legacy of compassion, commitment to community and dedication to advancing equality in health services will live on in PHS’ work and the lives he touched. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Ray’s family and all who knew and admired him.
