Shipbuilding isn’t for the weak. The mighty aircraft carrier is a modern marvel on the open seas, but it wouldn’t exist without the hard work of our shipbuilders. This National US Navy Aircraft Carrier Month, we’d like to take a moment to shine a light on the shipbuilders who work behind the scenes to bring our carriers to life. Check out this photo of shipbuilders at Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII, completing the pour for the first Doris Miller (#CVN81) casting in the shipyard’s Foundry in 2021.

We are proud to honor and welcome Senator Sam Nunn, the namesake of Flight III Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, DDG 133, to the ship’s keel authentication ceremony this morning. This milestone marks the first significant step in the ship’s construction. The future USS Sam Nunn (DDG 133) stands as a tribute to the legacy of one of the most influential figures in U.S. national security. His leadership was pivotal in shaping U.S. defense policy and his groundbreaking work in nuclear disarmament helped reduce the global threat of weapons of mass destruction. The ship also honors the continuing impact of the Nunn family, with the senator’s daughter Michelle Nunn serving as the ship sponsor. Her appointment as sponsor ties her family’s legacy of service to the future of the U.S. Navy, inspiring a new generation of defenders committed to protecting our world. We're with the winning team! ?? The crew of USS Gerald R. Ford (#CVN78), built by Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII, was presented the 2024 Battenberg Cup during a ceremony aboard the aircraft carrier at Naval Station Norfolk in Norfolk, Va., on September 30. #CVN78 was named the best all-around ship in the Atlantic Fleet after exhibiting superior battle efficiency throughout the 2023 calendar year, meeting the demanding requirements of a carrier strike group deployment to the U.S. Fifth and Sixth Fleet areas of operations. Since 1977, the Battenberg Cup award has been presented annually to a ship or submarine selected by the commander of the U.S. Fleet Forces Command based on crew achievements. On behalf of our shipbuilders who put in countless hours constructing this mighty carrier, we send congratulations to the Ford crew for their outstanding performance! ??: U.S. Fleet Forces Command
