I’ve debated whether or not to share this, but vulnerability is important and we’re all human beings. Here goes… My mom passed away unexpectedly when I was 18. This event changed my life professionally, academically, spiritually, physically, and mentally. As a senior in high school who had already committed to college, I desperately wanted to find my place in this world. When I was 20, my maternal grandmother passed away. I was grieving the loss of basically two mothers in 2.5 years and truly felt like my life was over. How could I live every day without my two most important women? One. Day. At. A. Time. That’s how. Sometimes, it was one hour at a time. I got a bachelor’s degree. I graduated in 4 years. I learned another language. I paid off my student loans. I completed a master’s degree. I worked in a variety of industries. I did, and still continue to do, all the right things, but it never felt like I was good enough. For years, it seemed like I was the book being judged by its cover. Almost 12 years later, and I can confidently say that I’ve found what I was looking for all this time. I’ve found purpose. I’ve found resiliency. I’ve found dedication. I’ve found recovery. I’ve found freedom. I’ve found a second chance at life. I’ve found happiness. Most importantly, I’ve found an organization who gives grieving children that have lost a parent what I didn’t have… That’s Empower and I’m humbled to be chosen as a Mentor to support a young woman in the loss of her mother. Together, we can change lives!

We are so proud to share that one of our own, Jeff McGowan was honored with the Difference Maker of the Week Award by the New England Patriots ?? The Patriots Foundation was able to highlight all that Jeff has been able to do for the community, "Jeff’s volunteer roles include recruiting male mentors, serving as a spokesperson and lead ambassador, sharing his story of loss, and serving as a mentor himself." Jeff meets with newly enrolled families and mentors, encouraging them to be a part of our Empower community - one he wished he had when he experienced the loss of his father. Your dedication inspires us all. We are proud to have you as a part of our Empower Community.
