Well, norovirus decided to kick off 2025 with a bang! See that highest point on the graph since late 2018? That surge is now. Norovirus, aka “stomach flu,” is highly contagious, and alcohol-based sanitizers aren’t fully protective. This is a soap-and-water situation. So, wash your hands like you don’t want to spend the night bonding with the toilet. (20 seconds minimum, soap + water!)

Reposting while balancing on one foot…
An NIH-supported study found that grip strength, knee strength, and balance—especially the ability to stand on just one leg for 30 seconds—begin to decline significantly in the decades after age 50. Working on balance and strength can help you stay healthier as you age. https://bit.ly/3YVxPqD #aging #balance #strength #HealthyAging #NIH

?? Flu season is here! If you’ve been waiting* to get your shot, now’s the time. ??? Data from the southern hemisphere indicates that this year’s vaccine is about 35% effective against hospitalization. Not stellar, but trust me, if you've ever felt the misery of a bad flu, it’s a bargain! ?? *I held off not from lack of enthusiasm, but because immunity fades over time. Remember, it takes up to two weeks for the vaccine to kick in, so don’t wait too long! ??? #FluSeason #GetVaccinated

Tick season is upon us so many people are concerned about tick-borne diseases, some legitimate and some because of media misinformation and clickbait. Follow The American Lyme Disease Foundation and head to www.aldf.com for fact-based information, but: Preventing tick-borne diseases starts with preventing tick bites: 1?? Effective repellents applied to your skin are the single most important thing you can do to prevent tick bites. DEET or picaridin are the methods that are SAFE & EFFECTIVE against ticks. If you’re using “natural” alternatives - or no repellent - and are surprised you’re getting bitten, don’t be. Because that doesn’t work. DEET and picaridin have decades of safety and efficacy data and anyone 2 months and older can use them. If you live in an area with high tick prevalence, this should always be part of your routine. Too many people don’t bother and that’s a problem. 20-30% DEET or 20% picaridin repel ticks for 6-8 hours. Other EPA-registered options like OLE and IR3535 don’t have consistent data for ticks, and other “DIY” options definitely do not. 2?? permethrin on clothing. This is an insecticide that kills ticks with contact. You can treat your own clothes or or purchase pre-treated clothing, and make sure it’s dry before wearing. 3?? tick checks! Ticks crawl up our bodies to find a place to attach, which can take several hours, so checking yourself after being outdoors reduces your risk of bites. Check ALL your crevices: armpits, in/behind the ears, your navel, behind the knees, the hairline, and your groin. 4?? change clothes & shower promptly after being outside. You can also wear light colored clothing to make ticks more obvious. It you aren’t bitten by a tick, you can’t get infected by pathogens they may be carrying.
