October is Health Literacy Month! We’re honoring the hospitals, health centers, social service agencies, and nonprofits that help make health information accessible! At BCS, we provide important health resources to Brooklynites of all backgrounds through many of of our programs, from our Street Outreach Mobile Unit to our DayHab rehabilitation center. From the BCS Historical Archives: Our Red Hook Health Centre in the late 19th century! While the center has since closed its doors, BCS still provides services in the community at our Red Hook Housing Program, which offers a transitional space and counseling services for homeless adults. Meet BCS staff member Kim! In her role as Employment Specialist, Kim leads our Supportive Work Readiness Program for adults with intellectual disabilities. She teaches participants soft skills like getting to work on time, respecting co-workers, and dressing appropriately and also helps them prepare for job interviews and get real-world job training. Meet Keonda Gaspard, the Education Specialist at our Youth Stand United program in Brownsville. Keonda started working at BCS two years ago and loves helping young adults achieve their educational and professional goals. She sees herself as a mentor and friend and hopes that every student she works with feels empowered to pursue the things they are passionate about. “Most teenagers don't talk–they see adults and they're reserved and quiet– so it's kind of cool to see them open up,” Keonda says. “They all come in to YSU really shy, and by the time they're leaving, they're cracking jokes and volunteering and introducing themselves to the new kids.” #wearebcs #education #school #YSU #YouthStandUnited #college #careers #youth #highschool #Brooklyn #nonprofit #NYCnonprofit
