We’ve been saying for years that #conflict isn’t a bad word—with all the conflict around us these days, it might seem like one though! But it doesn't have to be that way. Productive conflict can?create a better product, a more effective solution or a more creative way forward. At Groundswell we have been mediating conflict for decades. On February 7th we brought 500 #students and #teachers to California State University, Fullerton to walk in each other's shoes. Though we have been hosting the Walk in My Shoes Conference for over 30 years, it felt especially timely this year. ?? First of all, seeing and hearing students from across the county in real life matters. ?? Second, #understanding what it is like to be someone else is the sure fire way to build #empathy and #compassion for the "other" and to break through our #divisions. ?? Third, so much energy, SO MUCH #ENERGY. ?? And fourth, we've all been taught the value of "learning to play well with others," but we don't always carry this in to adulthood. At Walk in My Shoes young people are working and learning along side people of all strides and backgrounds. These students will be better for navigating different view points, ideas, experiences and the reality that this is the world they will lead in someday. For our communities to thrive we need this ability to engage, dialogue and problem solve with every resources available to us - meaning we need all the ideas, from all the people, all the time. #Innovation, #creativity, effective #policy are germinated in places like this. We don't come to agree, we come to understand and #co-create. And it is a beautiful thing to see! Thank you to #CSUF and to the office of Congressman Lou Correa, State Senator Tom Umberg, Supervisor Sarmiento and Supervisor Chaffee for supporting the event!
